Coming from a notably dry year with significantly lower yields, this wine combines concentration, freshness, and elegance in a way that rewards both immediate drinking and long cellaring. With six years of barrel aging and further bottle rest, it offers the classic mature Tondonia character that collectors seek.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2012 Viña Tondonia Reserva shows a luminous ruby core with brick‑tinged edges, reflecting its extended aging and graceful evolution. The nose is beautifully developed and aromatic, offering layers of dried red cherries, orange peel, leather, sweet spices, and cigar box, wrapped in notes of forest floor, a subtle hint of iodine, and that characteristic touch of dusty earth that signals traditional Rioja. On the palate, it is medium‑bodied yet surprisingly full and rounded, with polished, fine‑grained tannins and a spine of vibrant acidity that keeps everything lively. Flavors of red currant, sour cherry, dried strawberry, and plum mingle with savory notes of cured meat, black tea, clove, and gentle vanilla from long aging in old American oak. The finish is long, dry, and elegant, with a persistent, subtly spicy aftertaste. Already drinking beautifully, this 2012 still has excellent aging potential; properly cellared, it should continue to evolve gracefully for another 10–15 years, gaining even more tertiary complexity.
Production
Viña Tondonia Reserva 2012 is sourced from the estate’s famed Viña Tondonia vineyards, planted on the banks of the Ebro River near Haro in Rioja Alta. Here, a mix of calcareous clay and alluvial soils, combined with a relatively cool climate and significant diurnal shifts, produces grapes with natural freshness and balance. The blend is dominated by Tempranillo, complemented by Garnacha, Graciano, and Mazuelo, all hand‑harvested at low yields in this particularly dry vintage, which delivered exceptionally healthy fruit with a fine balance of alcohol and polyphenols. True to Lopez de Heredia’s time‑honored methods, the wine underwent a traditional vinification and was then aged for an extended six years in well‑seasoned American oak barrels, with regular rackings by hand and minimal intervention. It was bottled without aggressive filtration, preserving its authentic, old‑world character.
Food & Serving
This classic Rioja Reserva is a natural partner for roasted or grilled lamb, slow‑cooked beef dishes, and game birds, as well as Spanish staples like jamón ibérico, chorizo, and hearty tapas. It also shines with mushroom dishes, aged Manchego or other firm cheeses, and rustic stews featuring beans or lentils. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity. Decanting for about 45–60 minutes is recommended to allow the wine to fully open and to shed any initial bottle reduction, especially if enjoyed in its youth or just after release.
