Crafted from grapes grown on relatively young vines across several sites, it’s designed to be both immediately charming and seriously refined. This cuvée brings together lots fermented and matured in stainless steel and traditional large German oak casks, echoing a long regional tradition of Riesling-making with a modern, ultra-clean touch.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Riesling shows a pale lemon color with green highlights, signaling freshness and youth. The nose is vivid and pure, with aromas of lime zest, green apple, white peach and crisp pear layered over wet stone, crushed slate and a whisper of white flowers and herbs. On the palate, it is bone-dry, linear and finely etched, with racy acidity that gives the wine a mouthwatering, almost electric energy. Citrus and orchard fruits lead the charge, supported by saline, stony minerality and a very light hint of phenolic grip that adds structure without weight. The finish is long, refreshing and clean, leaving citrus peel, mineral and a faint herbal nuance. Enjoy it now for its youthful vibrancy, but it will comfortably develop more complexity over the next 3–5 years, gaining softer edges and subtle honeyed and smoky notes while retaining its backbone of freshness.
Production
The fruit for Dönnhoff Riesling Nahe Trocken 2024 comes from relatively young vines planted in select Nahe vineyards, where a mosaic of volcanic, slate and weathered sandstone soils gives the wine its hallmark tension and minerality. Grapes are hand-harvested to ensure optimal ripeness and careful selection in the vineyard, preserving purity and delicacy. After gentle pressing, the must is fermented with a cool, controlled fermentation in a combination of stainless-steel tanks and large traditional German oak casks (Stück- and Doppelstückfässer). This mix of vessels keeps the wine bright and precise while adding a subtle textural roundness. The wine rests on its fine lees before bottling, enhancing depth and integration without sacrificing its crystalline clarity.
Food & Serving
This dry Nahe Riesling is a remarkably versatile partner at the table, shining alongside fresh seafood (oysters, shrimp, ceviche), simply prepared white fish, sushi and sashimi, as well as light poultry dishes and crisp salads with citrus or herb dressings. It also works beautifully with Asian-inspired cuisine—think Vietnamese spring rolls, Thai dishes with lime and lemongrass, or lightly spiced curries—where its acidity and dryness cut through richness and balance heat. Serve well-chilled, around 8–10°C, for maximum freshness and definition. Decanting is not essential, but opening the bottle 15–20 minutes before serving or using a quick splash in a carafe can help the aromas open up, especially in the first year or two after release.
