Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Langoa Barton shows a deep garnet-purple colour with a bright, youthful rim. The nose opens with blackcurrant and blackberry, followed by notes of plum, graphite, cedar, dried violets and a touch of tobacco leaf and spice from oak aging. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with a classic Saint-Julien profile: precise cassis and dark cherry fruit framed by firm, fine-grained tannins and a lively, refreshing acidity. Flavours of graphite, cigar box, pencil shavings and a hint of mocha add complexity and length. The finish is long, savoury and focused, suggesting excellent ageing capacity. While already approachable with some aeration, this 2017 has the structure to evolve gracefully for 12–18 years from vintage, gaining more tertiary nuances of leather, truffle and forest floor over time.

Production
Château Langoa Barton is located in the heart of Saint-Julien, on deep gravel soils over a clay and limestone subsoil—an ideal terroir for Cabernet Sauvignon, providing both drainage and slow, even ripening. The vineyards are traditionally tended, with careful parcel selection and largely manual work throughout the growing season, including hand-harvesting at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, the grapes are sorted and vinified in temperature-controlled wooden or stainless-steel vats, with gentle extraction to preserve finesse rather than power. The wine is then aged in French oak barriques (a significant proportion new) for around 16–18 months, with regular rackings, before blending and bottling at the château.

Food & Serving
This Saint-Julien is a superb partner to classic dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, grilled or roasted beef, duck breast, venison, and hearty dishes like beef bourguignon or mushroom-based casseroles. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses such as Comté or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C; if drinking now, decant for 1–2 hours to allow the bouquet and texture to fully open. As it matures, a shorter decant of around 45 minutes is usually sufficient to remove any sediment and let the wine express its secondary and tertiary aromas.
