Crafted from all the traditional varieties, with a strong Mourvèdre and Grenache core, it marries richness and freshness in a way that’s distinctly Beaucastel. The 2020 is already praised by critics for its balance, silky texture and early approachability, yet built with the depth to age gracefully for decades.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Beaucastel shows a deep, vibrant ruby color with a youthful purple rim. The nose is complex and expressive, offering layers of red and black fruits—think ripe raspberry, red cherry and plum—interwoven with notes of black pepper, garrigue (thyme, rosemary, lavender), dried flowers and a subtle gamey, meaty nuance from the Mourvèdre. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, fresh and energetic, with a supple, almost velvety texture. Juicy red fruits are wrapped in savory spice, licorice, hints of tobacco and a touch of warm stones and herbs. The tannins are remarkably fine and soft for Beaucastel in its youth, making the 2020 particularly approachable early, while a bright spine of acidity keeps everything in balance. The finish is long, silkier than many vintages, and layered with lingering notes of pepper, dried herbs and red fruit. While it can be enjoyed from around 2024, it has the structure and concentration to evolve beautifully through roughly 2040, developing more truffle, leather and earthy complexity with time.
Production
The vineyards of Château de Beaucastel lie on classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape terroir: large rounded galets roulés (river stones) over clay, sand and limestone, which retain heat by day and slowly release it at night, helping bring the grapes to perfect ripeness. Farmed organically for decades, the estate focuses on low yields and meticulous vineyard work, with the grapes harvested by hand parcel by parcel and sorted carefully to ensure only perfectly healthy fruit is used. In 2020, the blend is built around approximately 30% Mourvèdre and 20–30% Grenache, supported by Syrah, Counoise and a mix of other permitted red and white varieties, in the traditional Beaucastel style. Vinification typically involves gentle extraction, fermentation in temperature-controlled vats, and aging in large old oak foudres and tanks, which preserve fruit purity and freshness while allowing the complex blend to harmonize without overt oak influence.
Food & Serving
This 2020 Châteauneuf-du-Pape pairs beautifully with hearty, savory dishes such as roast lamb with rosemary, duck confit, braised beef, game birds, or a classic Provençal daube. It also shines alongside dishes featuring Mediterranean herbs—grilled vegetables, ratatouille, mushroom ragouts, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or Manchego. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) to highlight its balance of fruit and spice. Young bottles will benefit from 1–2 hours in a decanter to fully open the aromatics and soften the structure; mature bottles will generally need only a brief decant to remove sediment.
Producer
Château de Beaucastel is one of the most revered names in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with roots dating back to the 16th century and a modern history shaped by the Perrin family, who took over in the early 20th century. The estate is renowned for its commitment to all 13 traditional grape varieties and for its pioneering work in organic and biodynamic viticulture long before these became common in the region. Beaucastel has played a major role in defining the rich yet nuanced, ageworthy style of top Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and its wines are regularly among the most highly rated and sought-after from the Southern Rhône. Consistent critical acclaim and a long track record of wines that age gracefully for decades have cemented Beaucastel’s status as a true reference point for Rhône enthusiasts worldwide.
