This cuvée draws on some of the estate’s best granitic slopes around Niedermorschwihr, offering both immediate pleasure and serious aging potential. It stands out for its precision, mineral drive, and the unmistakable Boxler signature of intensity without heaviness, rooted in centuries of winemaking tradition in Alsace.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Riesling Réserve shows a bright, pale straw color with green reflections, signaling freshness and youth. The nose is vivid and crystalline, opening with citrus blossom, lime zest, and white peach, followed by green apple, crushed stone, and delicate herbal notes—think lemon balm and chamomile—with a whisper of wet slate and smoke. On the palate, this is dry, taut, and finely structured, with racy acidity that carries flavors of lemon, ripe pear, tangy grapefruit, and white nectarine. A pronounced saline-mineral streak runs through the wine, giving it lift and length, while the texture remains silky and focused rather than broad. The finish is long, mouthwatering, and precise, leaving impressions of citrus oil, stone fruit skin, and granite minerality. While very enjoyable now after some air, this 2022 has the structure to evolve beautifully for 8–12 years, gaining complexity in honeyed, smoky, and petrol notes without losing its backbone.
Production
Sourced from steep, terraced vineyards around the village of Niedermorschwihr in Alsace, this Riesling grows on predominantly granitic soils that are key to Boxler’s signature tension and minerality. The estate works with meticulous, largely organic vineyard practices and very low yields, with all grapes harvested by hand to ensure perfect selection in the vineyard. In the cellar, the fruit is gently pressed and fermented with indigenous yeasts in traditional large foudres, followed by extended aging on fine lees to build texture and aromatic complexity. Intervention is minimal, sulfur use is restrained, and the aim is to capture the clarity of site and vintage rather than to shape the wine with heavy winemaking techniques.
Food & Serving
Albert Boxler’s Alsace Riesling Réserve is an exceptionally versatile food wine. It pairs beautifully with seafood—especially oysters, scallops, sushi and sashimi, grilled fish, and shellfish—as well as Alsatian classics like choucroute garnie, tarte flambée, and dishes with sauerkraut or smoked pork. It is also outstanding with fresh goat’s cheese, soft cow’s milk cheeses, lightly spiced Asian cuisine, and vegetable dishes featuring fennel, asparagus, or citrus. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally around 8–10°C (46–50°F), to allow the aromatics to open. Young bottles benefit from 20–30 minutes in the glass or a short decant to fully reveal their precision and layered minerality.
