Sourced from high-altitude, granite-rich vineyards in the subregion of Monção e Melgaço, this cuvée focuses on elegance, salty freshness, and terroir transparency. It is a standout choice for those who love Alvarinho in its most linear, crystalline style, with the 2024 vintage promising vibrant energy and finesse.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2024 Soalheiro Granit Alvarinho shows a pale lemon color with greenish highlights, signalling youth and freshness. The nose is focused and refined rather than exuberant, opening with lime zest, lemon peel, and green apple, followed by white grapefruit, crushed stone, and hints of white flowers and sea spray. Subtle herbal notes—like freshly cut fennel and lemon balm—add complexity without weighing down the minerality. On the palate, this is taut, dry, and beautifully linear, with a pronounced acid spine that carries flavors of citrus, green plum, and crisp pear. True to its name, there’s a distinct stony, almost salty character that runs from start to finish, giving the wine fantastic precision and length. The texture is sleek yet lightly rounded by some time on lees, ending in a long, mouthwatering finish with lingering citrus pith and mineral notes. While highly enjoyable in its youth for its brightness, this wine has the structure to evolve gracefully for 4–6 years, gaining more complexity, subtle nuttiness, and savory depth over time.
Production
Granit Alvarinho is sourced from Soalheiro’s higher-altitude vineyards in Monção e Melgaço, in northern Vinho Verde, where cool Atlantic influences and significant day–night temperature swings preserve acidity and aromatic finesse. The vines grow on poor, well-drained granitic soils that naturally limit yields and sharpen the wine’s mineral profile. Grapes are carefully hand-harvested at optimal ripeness to maintain both flavor concentration and freshness, then gently pressed. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel at controlled low temperatures to highlight the pure varietal character without oak influence. Malolactic fermentation is typically blocked to retain the wine’s razor-sharp acidity, and a short period of aging on fine lees adds texture and subtle complexity while keeping the style clean, direct, and terroir-focused.
Food & Serving
This Alvarinho is a superb partner for seafood and dishes that call for high acidity and a mineral backbone. Think oysters, razor clams, ceviche, grilled sardines, sushi and sashimi, or simple shellfish platters with lemon. It also pairs beautifully with delicately flavored fish, fresh goat cheese, light tapas, and citrus-accented salads or dishes featuring fresh herbs. Serve well-chilled at around 8–10°C (46–50°F) to emphasize its precision and freshness. Decanting is not required, but pouring it into a good white wine glass and giving it a few minutes in the glass will help the aromatics open and reveal more of the wine’s floral and stony nuances.
