Sourced from a meticulously farmed parcel in Bannockburn, Central Otago, it offers a seamless balance of purity, minerality and understated power. Block 6 is prized for its low yields and biodynamic cultivation, resulting in a wine of notable concentration, precision and age-worthy structure.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Block 6 Chardonnay shows a pale straw color with green-tinged hues, signaling freshness and youthful intensity. The nose is immediately detailed and complex: white peach, lemon zest and crisp apple layer over notes of fennel, wet stone, and subtle oak-derived tones of brioche, toasted hazelnut and delicate vanilla. On the palate, this is finely etched and tightly focused, with a core of citrus and stone fruit framed by vibrant, saline acidity. The texture is both creamy and linear, with a chalky, mineral grip that extends the finish. Nuances of almond, grilled citrus and a light smokiness emerge with air, hinting at the wine’s depth and capacity to evolve. While already beautifully composed in its youth, the structure and balance suggest excellent aging potential over the next 7–10 years, gaining further complexity, honeyed tones and more pronounced nuttiness with time in bottle.
Production
Block 6 lies on the north-facing slopes of Felton Road’s estate vineyards in Bannockburn, Central Otago, where free-draining schist and loess soils, cool nights and intense sunlight create ideal conditions for slow, even ripening. Felton Road farms this site organically and biodynamically, with careful canopy management and low yields to concentrate flavor and preserve natural acidity. Fruit is harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, then gently whole-bunch pressed. The juice is fermented with indigenous yeasts in French oak barrels, a portion of which are new, allowing for subtle integration of oak rather than overt influence. Lees aging with periodic bâtonnage builds texture and complexity, while malolactic fermentation is typically allowed in part or in full, contributing to the wine’s creamy mid-palate and harmonious balance.
Food & Serving
The 2023 Felton Road Block 6 Chardonnay is a versatile partner at the table, particularly with refined seafood and poultry dishes. Think pan-seared scallops, butter-poached lobster, roast chicken with tarragon, or grilled fish with lemon and herbs; it also works beautifully with creamy mushroom dishes, richer poultry terrines and soft-ripened cheeses like Brie or Camembert. Serve slightly chilled at around 10–12°C (50–54°F) to allow the aromatics and texture to fully express themselves. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes, or simply allowing the wine to open in the glass, can help reveal additional layers of minerality and spice, especially in its first few years after release.
