Description

Quinta Agua Alta Fine Ruby is a vibrant, fruit-driven Port from the steep, high-altitude slopes of the Douro Valley. Crafted from classic indigenous grapes, it delivers generous flavour, freshness and an authentic sense of place at a very approachable level. This fine ruby style draws on generations of family experience, yet reflects the modern touch of a new winemaking generation at Quinta Da Agua Alta.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Fine Ruby shows a deep, youthful ruby-red colour with a bright, almost purple rim, signalling energy and concentration. The nose is expressive and inviting, with aromas of ripe black cherry, blackberry and cassis layered with notes of plum compote, crushed violets and a touch of sweet spice and cocoa. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied with plush, juicy dark fruit at the core – think blackberries, cherries and damsons – framed by soft, rounded tannins and a lively, balancing acidity. Subtle hints of dark chocolate, liquorice and dried herbs add complexity without overshadowing the primary fruit. The finish is smooth and warming, with a lingering sweetness and a clean, fresh aftertaste. As a non-vintage ruby Port designed for early enjoyment, it is best enjoyed within a few years of purchase rather than cellared long-term.

Production
Sourced from the steep, schist-based slopes of the Douro, Quinta Da Agua Alta’s vineyards sit high on the hillsides where the roads narrow and mechanisation is limited, encouraging careful, often manual work in the vines. The blend centres on traditional Port varieties – Tinta Cão, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca – each contributing structure, perfume and depth of fruit. Grapes are typically hand-harvested at optimal ripeness to preserve both sugar and natural acidity, then gently crushed and fermented for a short period to extract colour and flavour before the addition of neutral grape spirit halts fermentation and preserves natural sweetness. The wine is subsequently aged in large vats to retain its vivid fruit character and bottled as a Fine Ruby, offering a fresher, more primary expression of Douro Port.

Food & Serving
Quinta Agua Alta Fine Ruby is an excellent companion to rich chocolate desserts, dark chocolate fondants, brownies and flourless chocolate cake, as well as berry-based desserts like cherry clafoutis or a simple bowl of mixed berries. It also works beautifully with blue cheeses such as Stilton or Danish blue, and can be a delightful partner to nutty treats like roasted almonds or walnut tart. Serve slightly chilled, around 14–16°C, to highlight its freshness and keep the sweetness in balance. Decanting is not essential for this style, but a brief 15–30 minutes in a carafe can help the aromas open up before serving.

Producer
Quinta Da Agua Alta can be traced back at least to 1838, its name reflecting its lofty position high on the Douro’s dramatic, terraced slopes. For generations, the Borges family supplied their grapes and wines to some of the region’s major Port houses, quietly contributing to the reputation of Douro Port from behind the scenes. In recent years, the younger siblings Louisa and Maria Borges have led a new chapter, deciding to bottle under their own estate name to express a more personal style and quality focus. With Maria overseeing administration and marketing and Louisa – trained in some of the great Port houses – directing winemaking, Quinta Da Agua Alta has quickly gained recognition and awards, emerging as a noteworthy modern voice within this historic region.

Port wine! I love port wine. I actually think most people do too – if nothing else, then at least a little secretly. I like drinking it in the afternoon, that's no secret. Agua Alta is located a bit inland, about 940 meters above sea level. It tastes delicious. If you can get your hands on it, try it. It goes well with steak, cheese, or of course risalamande, when we get to that point.
