Description
La Rocalière Tavel Rosé 2020 is a serious, food‑worthy rosé from one of the Rhône Valley’s most historic pink‑wine appellations. Crafted from a classic blend of Cinsault, Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah, it delivers the depth and structure that have made Tavel the benchmark for dry, characterful rosé. This is not a simple terrace wine, but a rosé with real pedigree and a sense of place.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, La Rocalière Tavel Rosé 2020 shows a vibrant, deep pink hue with ruby reflections, typical of Tavel’s more intense style. The nose is expressive and layered, offering red berries (strawberry, raspberry, wild cherry), pomegranate and redcurrant, lifted by floral notes of rose and peony, with hints of white pepper, citrus zest and a touch of Mediterranean garrigue.
On the palate, this rosé is dry, full‑bodied and structured, with more weight than most rosés. Juicy red fruit and blood orange are framed by a fresh, mouthwatering acidity and a fine, lightly spicy grip from the Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. The mid‑palate shows a pleasant vinosity and a subtle savoury, herbal note that adds complexity. The finish is long and clean, with a lingering impression of red fruit and mineral freshness. While it’s delicious now, Tavel rosé typically has the concentration to develop for 2–3 years, gaining a softer texture and more savoury, spicy nuances over time.
Production
Domaine La Rocalière farms around 40 hectares in the southern Rhône, including 20 hectares in Tavel spread across the appellation’s three classic terroirs: limestone shale, rounded pebbles (galets roulés) and sandy soils. These varied sites, planted mainly with Grenache Noir, Mourvèdre, Syrah, Cinsault and Carignan, have an average vine age of about 30 years, with some bush‑trained vines over 40 years old. The estate is managed according to organic principles, with a strong focus on soil health, natural treatments and careful canopy work to ensure good aeration and disease prevention. Herbicides and synthetic chemicals are excluded; instead, mechanical weeding and thoughtful ground cover are used to manage water stress and prevent erosion. Harvesting is done by hand, with strict selection of the bunches. In the cellar, the grapes for this Tavel rosé are gently handled, with short macerations and temperature‑controlled vinification to extract colour and flavour while preserving freshness and aromatics, resulting in a structured yet vibrant rosé.
Food & Serving
This Tavel rosé is tailor‑made for the table and pairs beautifully with Mediterranean‑inspired cuisine: grilled lamb chops with herbs, roast chicken, charcuterie, Niçoise salad, ratatouille, or richer seafood dishes like bouillabaisse and grilled salmon. It also works well with spicy dishes, such as Provençal fish stews or mildly spiced Middle Eastern mezze. Serve at 10–12°C to balance freshness and aromatic expression. Decanting is not essential, but pouring the wine into a carafe 15–20 minutes before serving can help it open up its full bouquet and soften the structure slightly.
Producer
Domaine La Rocalière is based in the southern Rhône Valley, with vineyards in the renowned appellations of Tavel and Lirac, as well as small holdings in Vin de France around the village of Pujaut. The estate’s 40 or so hectares are planted to traditional Rhône varieties for rosé, red and white wines, and the team works with both old bush vines and younger, trellised plantings. Deeply committed to environmental respect and organic farming, La Rocalière focuses on close observation of the vines and terroir, minimal intervention and the exclusive use of natural treatments in the vineyard. Manual harvesting, careful selection and thoughtful cellar work have helped the domaine build a strong reputation as a reference producer in Tavel and Lirac, known for wines that faithfully express their varied limestone, pebble and sandy soils while offering excellent value and authenticity.
