Description

Domaine Ratte Arbois Naturé Bio 2022 is a pure, organically farmed expression of Savagnin from the heart of France’s Jura region. Despite its name, “Naturé” here doesn’t refer to natural wine in the modern sense, but to an old local synonym for Savagnin, a historic white variety closely related to White Traminer. This bottling showcases the grape’s innate power and precision, channeled through the cool climate and limestone-rich soils of Arbois for a wine that is both characterful and finely etched.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Arbois Naturé Bio 2022 typically shows a bright, pale to medium lemon hue with greenish reflections, hinting at its freshness and youthful energy. The nose is expressive yet not ostentatious: expect notes of citrus zest, green and yellow orchard fruits, subtle stone fruit, and a chalky, almost saline mineral edge. Gentle floral tones, white pepper, and hints of fresh nuts or almond skin can appear with air, underscoring the wine’s kinship to Traminer and other aromatic varieties without becoming overtly perfumed. On the palate, the wine is dry, structured, and full of drive, with Savagnin’s signature combination of ripe intensity and taut acidity. Flavors of lemon curd, quince, pear, and lightly spiced apple are wrapped around a core of stony, limestone-inflected minerality. The texture is firm and slightly waxy, with good mid-palate weight and a long, linear finish that leaves a lingering impression of citrus, crushed stone, and gentle herbal nuances. Thanks to Savagnin’s natural acidity and concentration, this 2022 has solid aging potential: it will drink beautifully now with a brief opening, but should develop added complexity—more honeyed, nutty, and savory notes—over the next 5–8 years, and likely longer under good cellaring conditions.

Production
The grapes for Domaine Ratte Arbois Naturé Bio 2022 come from organically cultivated vineyards around Arbois, rooted in very limestone-rich blue and grey marl soils that are emblematic of the Jura. These heavy, mineral-packed marl slopes are particularly well-suited to Savagnin, giving low yields and wines of notable power and tension. The estate farms using certified organic methods, favoring careful manual work in the vines and hand-harvesting to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes reach the cellar. In the winery, the philosophy is one of minimal intervention: gentle pressing, native yeast fermentations, and élevage designed to highlight Savagnin’s clarity and terroir rather than oak. The wine is made in an ‘ouillé’ (topped-up) style rather than under flor, preserving primary fruit purity, freshness, and a precise expression of the marl-driven terroir.

Food & Serving
This Arbois Savagnin is a superb table partner for the region’s classic dishes and beyond. It pairs beautifully with Comté and other hard mountain cheeses, poultry in creamy morel or mushroom sauces, rich river fish, trout with almonds, and shellfish such as scallops or lobster. It also works well with subtly spiced dishes, veal in white wine sauce, and vegetable-centric plates featuring fennel, leek, or celeriac. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to balance freshness and aromatic complexity. A short decant of 20–30 minutes can help the wine open up, especially in its youth, revealing more layers of fruit and mineral depth.

Producer
Domaine Ratte is a small, quality-focused family estate in Arbois, one of the historic and stylistic centers of the Jura. Working primarily with traditional regional varieties—Savagnin, Chardonnay, Poulsard, Trousseau, and Pinot Noir—the domaine has become known for precise, terroir-driven wines that faithfully reflect the region’s distinctive marl and limestone soils. Embracing organic farming and low-intervention cellar practices early on, Domaine Ratte has helped highlight the Jura’s potential for characterful, ageworthy wines that remain vibrant and finely balanced. Their bottlings, including this Arbois Naturé, are increasingly sought after by enthusiasts looking for authentic, site-expressive wines from one of France’s most intriguing regions.
