Description

David Moret Meursault 1er Cru Blagny 2023 is a finely cut, mineral-driven expression of Chardonnay from one of Meursault’s highest and most characterful premier cru sites. This is white Burgundy with precision and energy, wrapped in the discreet richness that has made Meursault so renowned. The Blagny climat, perched on the slope between Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet, has long been prized for producing wines that combine Meursault’s texture with Puligny’s tension and finesse.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Meursault 1er Cru Blagny shows a pale to medium lemon colour with a silvery edge and youthful brightness. The nose opens with citrus oil, lemon zest and crisp green apple, followed by white flowers, fresh almonds, and a touch of cool crushed stone. With air, more generous notes of ripe pear, brioche, hazelnut cream and a subtle hint of butter and vanilla emerge, all framed by a clean, chalky minerality. On the palate, this is tightly focused and elegant rather than opulent, with a vivid line of acidity that carries flavours of lemon curd, orchard fruit and white peach. The oak is finely judged, adding gentle toasted nut and spice nuances without overshadowing the fruit. There’s a palpable sense of lift from the higher-altitude Blagny site: the mid-palate is silky yet precise, leading to a long, saline and slightly smoky finish. While already attractive in its youth, the structure and balance suggest very good aging potential; it should evolve beautifully over 8–12 years, gaining complexity, creaminess and more pronounced nutty, honeyed notes.

Production
Blagny sits on the upper part of the slope above Meursault, on poor, stony limestone soils with a high proportion of rock and thin topsoil, and a slightly cooler, wind-exposed mesoclimate. This terroir naturally limits yields and gives wines with tension, minerality and aromatic purity. David Moret works as a quality-focused micro-négociant, sourcing grapes from sustainably farmed, old-vine parcels that are harvested by hand to ensure careful selection in the vineyard. In the cellar, the wine is traditionally vinified: gentle pressing, followed by fermentation in French oak barrels (a portion new, the rest seasoned) with indigenous yeasts. The wine then matures on fine lees with bâtonnage applied judiciously to bring texture and depth without sacrificing the site’s natural precision, before careful racking and bottling with minimal intervention.

Food & Serving
This Meursault 1er Cru Blagny is a classic partner for refined seafood and white meats. Think seared scallops, lobster with beurre blanc, turbot or halibut, roasted poultry with morels, veal in a light cream sauce, or richer dishes such as truffled risotto and monkfish with beurre blanc. It also pairs beautifully with aged Comté or other firm, nutty cheeses. Serve at 10–12°C to allow the aromatics and texture to unfold gradually. In its youth, a gentle decant of 30–45 minutes helps the wine open up and soften the edges of its freshness; with a few years of bottle age, simply open it a little in advance and pour into larger-bowled white wine glasses.

Producer
Based in Beaune, David Moret has built a reputation as one of Burgundy’s most meticulous small négociants, focusing almost exclusively on top-quality white wines from the Côte de Beaune. Working closely with growers who farm some of the region’s finest terroirs, he specialises in low-yield, hand-harvested fruit and a minimal-intervention philosophy that lets each climat speak clearly. His bottlings from Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet and surrounding premier cru sites are highly regarded for their precision, purity of fruit and finely integrated oak. Over the past decades, Moret has become a sought-after name among Burgundy enthusiasts looking for artisanal, terroir-driven whites that deliver both immediate pleasure and serious cellaring potential.

David Moret is one of my favorite houses in Burgundy, and this Meursault-Blagny 1er Cru shows why. A wine with classic Burgundy balance, where a reductive style, creamy richness, and precise acidity melt together harmoniously. Great complexity already now – but with the structure for 8-10 years of aging. A serious Premier Cru with both elegance and depth. Buy one for the summer, and one for the cellar! ;-)
