Description
Ceretto Barolo Prapò 1986 is a mature, single-vineyard Barolo from the famed Prapò cru in Serralunga d’Alba, one of the communes most celebrated for powerful, long-lived Nebbiolo. This bottle captures nearly four decades of evolution in the glass, offering a rare opportunity to experience fully mature Barolo from a classic warm vintage. Crafted in a traditional style, it showcases the firm structure, minerality and aromatic complexity that have made Prapò a connoisseur’s site. The key appeal here lies in its provenance: a single cru, a benchmark producer, and a vintage known for slow, graceful development. Extended aging in large Slavonian oak casks followed by long bottle maturation has shaped a wine of impressive depth, with tertiary aromas and silky, resolved tannins. Historically, Ceretto was among the pioneers in highlighting individual vineyards in Barolo, and Prapò has long been recognized as a site that produces structured, ageworthy wines – something this 1986 clearly underlines.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 1986 Barolo Prapò shows a brick-red, garnet core fading to an orange-brown rim — a textbook hue for mature Nebbiolo. The appearance already signals its advanced evolution and delicacy, yet the wine still retains good clarity and brightness.
The nose is layered and complex, opening with dried roses and violets, followed by truffle, leather, and undergrowth. Classic Barolo notes of tar and dried cherry intertwine with hints of tobacco, cinnamon, and anise, along with dried fig and other dried fruits. On the palate, the wine is elegant rather than powerful now, with a medium to full body that carries a fine, persistent line of acidity. The tannins have melted into a silky, velvety texture, yet there is still a noticeable backbone and a distinct mineral core from Prapò’s calcareous marl soils. Flavors echo the bouquet: dried red berries, balsamic notes, licorice, earthy nuances and a gentle spice complexity all carry through to a long, savory finish. At almost 40 years of age, this Barolo is at peak maturity and should be enjoyed now to within the next few years, provided it has been well cellared; further aging may add nuance but is unlikely to enhance structure or fruit.
Production
The Prapò vineyard sits on steep slopes in Serralunga d’Alba, rooted in calcareous marl soils that are rich in limestone and clay — a terroir famed for producing Barolo of firmness, minerality and longevity. Nebbiolo grapes here benefit from good sun exposure and a warm, stable 1986 growing season, which delivered excellent ripeness and concentration. The fruit was harvested by hand to ensure careful selection, then vinified in a traditional manner with a long maceration period to extract color, tannin and aromatic depth. Fermentation and extended skin contact were followed by several years of maturation in large Slavonian oak casks, a classic Barolo regimen that imparts gentle oxygenation without overt oak flavor. After cask aging, the wine spent significant additional time in bottle before release, allowing its structure to knit together and its complex tertiary bouquet to develop fully.
Food & Serving
This mature Barolo pairs beautifully with classic Piedmontese dishes and refined, savory cuisine. Think truffle-infused risotto, tajarin with butter and sage, mushroom-based dishes, braised veal or beef, game birds, and slow-cooked lamb. Aged cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano, well-matured Fontina, or hard sheep’s cheeses also make a superb match, especially when the wine’s earthy and truffled notes are at the forefront. Serve at 16–18 °C in large Burgundy or Barolo glasses to allow the bouquet to unfurl. Given its age, decant gently for 30–60 minutes to separate any sediment and let the aromas open, but avoid very long decanting so as not to tire the wine.
Producer
Ceretto is one of Piemonte’s best-known family-owned estates, with roots in the Langhe dating back to the 1930s. From the latter half of the 20th century, the Ceretto family became widely recognized for their focus on quality, vineyard expression and the promotion of individual crus in Barolo and Barbaresco. This approach helped elevate the perception of the Langhe’s finest vineyards, placing names like Prapò, Bricco Rocche and Brunate on the map for collectors worldwide. Over the decades, Ceretto has been regarded as a leading voice in Piemonte, combining respect for traditional methods with a meticulous attention to detail in the vineyards and cellar, and consistently producing wines that rank among the region’s most respected bottlings.
