Description
Domaine Anita’s 2024 Moulin-à-Vent Reine de Nuit is a modern, finely crafted expression of one of Beaujolais’ most esteemed crus. Sourced from prime parcels in Moulin-à-Vent, this Gamay marries the joyful fruit of Beaujolais with the structure and depth usually associated with Burgundy. The “Reine de Nuit” (Queen of the Night) cuvée is designed to showcase the appellation’s darker, more seductive side—velvety, intense, and built to charm both now and over the next several years.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2024 Reine de Nuit shows a deep, vibrant ruby color with purple reflections, hinting at both youth and concentration. The nose is expressive and layered, offering ripe black cherry, wild strawberry, and raspberry coulis, wrapped in notes of violets, crushed rose petals, and a subtle touch of peony. Delicate accents of pepper, warm earth, and a whisper of graphite add complexity as it opens.
On the palate, this Moulin-à-Vent is silky yet purposeful, with fine-grained tannins and a lively, mouthwatering acidity that keeps the dark fruit core fresh and lifted. Flavors of black cherry, ripe redcurrant, and morello cherry mingle with hints of licorice, spice, and a faint mineral edge from the granite soils. The finish is long, pure, and slightly savory, suggesting excellent balance for such a young wine. While already approachable in its youth, the 2024 Reine de Nuit has the structure to evolve gracefully over 5–8 years, developing more earthy, truffley nuances with time in bottle.
Production
Domaine Anita farms its Moulin-à-Vent vineyards on classic pink granite soils, which naturally limit vigor and concentrate flavor—particularly well-suited to Gamay. The grapes for Reine de Nuit typically come from older vines, harvested by hand to ensure optimal ripeness and careful selection in the vineyard and at the sorting table. Fermentation follows the Beaujolais tradition of semi-carbonic or partially destemmed vinification in temperature-controlled vats, preserving vibrant fruit while extracting fine tannins and color. Aging takes place mainly in stainless steel and neutral vessels, with a proportion in older barrels, to maintain freshness and precision while adding a gentle textural polish and subtle complexity.
Food & Serving
This 2024 Moulin-à-Vent Reine de Nuit is a versatile partner at the table, pairing beautifully with roast chicken, pork tenderloin, duck breast, charcuterie, and savory tarts. It also works well with earthy dishes such as mushroom risotto, lentil stews, and mild to medium-firm cheeses like Comté or Tomme. Serve slightly cool, at around 14–16°C (57–61°F), to highlight its freshness and floral notes. A short decant of 30 minutes can help the wine unfold its aromatics and soften the youthful structure, especially in its first few years after release.
Producer
Domaine Anita, led by winemaker Anita Kuhnel, has quickly become one of the standout names in Beaujolais, known for site-specific cuvées that emphasize precision, purity, and the character of each cru. Working with old vines in top appellations such as Moulin-à-Vent, Fleurie, and Chénas, the domaine focuses on meticulous vineyard work and thoughtful, low-intervention winemaking. This approach has earned consistent praise from international critics and helped reassert Beaujolais as a source of serious, ageworthy wines. Reine de Nuit is one of the estate’s flagship Moulin-à-Vent bottlings, often cited for its combination of elegance, depth, and a distinctly modern polish that appeals to both classicists and adventurous wine lovers.
