Description
The 2024 Domaine Anita Moulin-à-Vent La Rochelle is a poised and characterful red from one of Beaujolais’ most esteemed crus. Crafted entirely from Gamay, this cuvée showcases the power and structure that have made Moulin-à-Vent the most “Burgundian” of the Beaujolais appellations. La Rochelle is a prized single-vineyard site, giving this wine a distinctive depth and precision that sets it apart from more straightforward Beaujolais bottlings.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2024 La Rochelle shows a deep, vibrant ruby color with purple highlights, hinting at both youth and concentration. The nose is expressive and layered, offering ripe black cherry, wild strawberry, and crushed raspberry, interwoven with violet, peony, and a touch of spice. Subtle mineral notes and a whisper of graphite or fresh earth add complexity.
On the palate, this is a structured, full-flavored expression of Gamay, with silky yet firm tannins and a lively backbone of acidity. Flavors of dark cherry, blackcurrant, and red plum unfold alongside hints of black pepper, dried herbs, and a fine, stony minerality that reflects its granitic soils. The finish is long and persistent, with a savory, almost saline edge that invites another sip. While already appealing in its youthful, fruit-driven phase, the 2024 vintage has the balance and structure to evolve beautifully over the next 5–8 years, with the potential to develop more floral, truffley and sous-bois nuances in bottle.
Production
Domaine Anita’s Moulin-à-Vent La Rochelle comes from steep, well-exposed vineyards rooted in classic Beaujolais granite, a key to the wine’s tension and minerality. The La Rochelle climat is known for its poor, well-drained soils and naturally low yields, concentrating flavor in the small-berried Gamay grapes. Harvest is typically carried out by hand to ensure that only perfectly ripe and healthy bunches are selected. In the cellar, vinification focuses on preserving fruit purity while building structure: a mix of whole clusters and destemmed fruit may be used, followed by a controlled fermentation in stainless steel or concrete, with gentle extraction to avoid harsh tannins. The wine is then aged, often in a combination of tank and older oak, to round out texture and add subtle complexity without overwhelming the wine’s bright fruit and terroir character.
Food & Serving
This Moulin-à-Vent is a versatile table partner and shines with flavorful, savory dishes. It pairs beautifully with roasted or grilled poultry (especially roast chicken with herbs), pork tenderloin, duck breast, veal, and rabbit, as well as charcuterie, pâtés, and earthy dishes based on mushrooms or lentils. It also works very well with semi-soft cheeses such as Comté, Tomme, or mild goat cheeses. Serve at 14–16°C (57–61°F) to highlight both freshness and depth; in its youth, a brief 30–45 minute decant can help soften the tannins and open up the aromatics.
