Description

The 2016 Hermanos Pérez Pascuas Viña Pedrosa Gran Reserva is a benchmark Ribera del Duero red, crafted only in the very best vintages from the estate’s oldest vines. Long aging in oak and bottle has sculpted a deeply complex, classically styled wine that balances power with poise. Awarded 95 points by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, it stands out as one of the region’s reference Gran Reservas, built for both contemplation and long-term cellaring.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Gran Reserva shows a deep, intense ruby core with garnet hues emerging at the rim, a sign of its extended aging and slow evolution. Swirl the glass and the wine opens gradually, revealing aromas that deepen with air: fresh red fruits such as cherry, kriek and plum, layered with fine spice, dried flowers, mineral tones and a subtle, sweet-edged oak complexity. On the palate, the first impression mirrors the nose: pure, vibrant red fruit wrapped in a refined structure. The texture is both concentrated and elegant, with a core of ripe cherry and plum framed by fresh acidity and a firm yet polished tannic backbone. Mineral notes and discreet, well-integrated oak (from both French and American barrels) add depth rather than dominance, contributing hints of spice, tobacco and a touch of cocoa. The finish is very long, persistent and distinctly mineral, with a savory, meaty nuance that invites another sip. Already beautifully expressive, this 2016 Gran Reserva has the structure and balance to evolve gracefully for well over a decade in a good cellar.

Production
Sourced from carefully selected old-vine parcels in Ribera del Duero, this Gran Reserva reflects the region’s dramatic terroir: high-altitude vineyards (generally 500–850 meters) exposed to a strongly continental climate of cold winters, hot summers and pronounced day–night temperature swings. The soils are predominantly poor, composed of sandy and calcareous layers with areas of alluvial stones near the Duero River, naturally limiting yields and concentrating flavor. The wine is made primarily from the local Tempranillo clone known as Tinto Fino or Tinta del País, hand-harvested at optimal ripeness from mature vines planted by the family over generations. In the cellar, only exceptional years are deemed worthy of Gran Reserva status; the must is vinified traditionally, followed by an élevage of 24 months in a mix of French and American oak barrels. After racking and careful selection, the wine rests a further 36 months in bottle before release, ensuring that it reaches the market with its components harmoniously integrated and its complexity already unfolding.

Food & Serving
This is a serious, gastronomic wine that shines with richly flavored dishes. Classic pairings include roast lamb, slow-braised beef, game (venison, wild boar), and hearty stews such as ossobuco or rabo de toro. It also works beautifully with aged hard cheeses, Iberico ham, and grilled or roasted mushrooms that echo its earthy, mineral undertones. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and structural finesse. Decanting for 1–2 hours before serving is recommended, especially in its youth, to allow the wine to fully open and reveal its layered bouquet.

Producer
Bodegas Hermanos Pérez Pascuas is one of Ribera del Duero’s pioneering estates, founded in 1980 when brothers Benjamín, Manuel and Adolfo Pérez Pascuas decided to build on the excellent vineyards planted by their father, Mauro. From the outset, their ambition was clear: to craft one of Spain’s finest wines from the unique terroir around their village of Pedrosa de Duero—hence the name Viña Pedrosa. As the appellation grew from just a handful of private wineries in 1982 to more than 200 today, Pérez Pascuas remained firmly among the region’s traditional, quality-driven benchmarks. Under the guidance of winemaker José Manuel Pérez, Benjamín’s eldest son and estate oenologist since 1989, the bodega has become renowned for its mastery of Tinto Fino and its precise handling of oak, consistently producing age-worthy, critically acclaimed wines that embody the soul of Ribera del Duero.
