Crafted from botrytized Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc, this vintage captures the essence of Yquem’s legendary style: opulent richness lifted by remarkable freshness. As the only estate ever classified as Premier Cru Supérieur in the 1855 Sauternes classification, Yquem stands alone at the pinnacle of sweet wine production.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2010 Yquem shows a deep, luminous golden hue that will gradually deepen with age. The nose is intensely expressive yet refined, offering layers of ripe apricot, candied citrus peel, mango, and baked peach, interwoven with notes of acacia honey, vanilla bean, toasted brioche, and a subtle hint of saffron and spice from the oak. Delicate floral tones and a touch of fresh lemon zest give aromatic lift and complexity. On the palate, this wine is rich and viscous, with a silky, almost creamy texture that coats the mouth while remaining beautifully poised. Flavors of dried apricot, pineapple, quince paste, and orange marmalade are balanced by vibrant acidity, which keeps the wine from feeling heavy and ensures a long, precise finish. Notes of honeycomb, almond, and sweet spice linger on the palate. The 2010 has superb aging potential: while already deeply enjoyable, it will continue to evolve and gain nuance over several decades, easily drinking well for 30–40 years or more under proper cellaring.
Production
Château d’Yquem sits atop one of Sauternes’ most privileged terroirs in Bordeaux, with a mosaic of gravel, clay, and limestone soils that provide excellent drainage and help concentrate flavor in the grapes. The morning mists and warm afternoons of the region are ideal for the development of noble rot (Botrytis cinerea), which shrivels the grapes and concentrates sugars, acidity, and aromas. Harvesting is carried out entirely by hand in multiple meticulous passes (tries) through the vineyard, with pickers selecting only perfectly botrytized berries—one of the keys to Yquem’s legendary quality. In the cellar, the must is slowly fermented in small French oak barrels, often with a high proportion of new oak, and the wine is then aged in barrel for around 18–30 months, depending on the vintage, with careful élevage and strict selection before bottling to ensure only the finest lots make the final blend.
Food & Serving
Château d’Yquem 2010 is a versatile partner at the table, shining with classic pairings such as foie gras, terrines, and rich pâtés, as well as with blue cheeses like Roquefort or Stilton. It also works beautifully alongside dishes featuring lobster, scallops, or roasted poultry with a touch of sweetness in the sauce, and it can be a luxurious match with fruit-based desserts, almond tarts, or crème brûlée—provided the dessert is not sweeter than the wine. For optimal enjoyment, serve slightly chilled at around 10–12°C (50–54°F). Young bottles can benefit from 30–60 minutes in a decanter to help the aromatics fully open, while older, mature bottles should be handled more gently and decanted only briefly, if at all, to avoid losing delicate tertiary nuances.
Producer
Château d’Yquem is one of the most iconic estates in Bordeaux and arguably the world’s most famous sweet wine producer. With records dating back to the late 16th century, Yquem has long been synonymous with excellence, culminating in its unique elevation to Premier Cru Supérieur status in the 1855 classification of Sauternes and Barsac—a distinction granted to no other château. Located in the commune of Sauternes, the estate has built its reputation on uncompromising standards: extremely low yields, painstaking selection of grapes, and a willingness to forgo production in difficult years rather than compromise quality. Over the centuries, Yquem has earned a near-mythic status among collectors and wine lovers, serving as the reference point for age-worthy, noble-rot sweet wines and a standard-bearer for the Sauternes region worldwide.
