Crafted in tiny quantities by one of the Mosel’s most respected boutique estates, it delivers laser-like precision, clarity and energy in the glass. Fermented spontaneously and matured in traditional large oak casks, this is a wine that proudly expresses its origin and the old-school craftsmanship behind it.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Trarbacher trocken shows a pale, shimmering straw-yellow with green highlights, hinting at its youth and freshness. The nose can initially be quite reductive when the bottle is first opened, showing smoky, flinty nuances and a touch of struck match. With a bit of air, it unfolds beautifully to reveal crystalline aromas of citrus zest, green apple, wild herbs and a cool, stony minerality. On the palate, the wine is razor-sharp, dry and precise, with a taut, mouthwatering acidity that feels both ripe and firmly structured. Notes of lime, grapefruit and crunchy orchard fruit are wrapped in herbal and menthol-like nuances, giving a cooling, almost crystalline impression. The finish is long, flinty and mineral-driven, with a salty edge that makes you instinctively reach for another sip. While already thrilling in its youth, the vibrant acidity and mineral core suggest very good aging potential over the next 5–8 years, during which it will gain complexity and further integration.
Production
The grapes for this Riesling come from steep, terraced vineyards around Trarbach in the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, rooted in poor, grey slate soils that naturally limit yields and intensify mineral expression. All work in the vineyard follows organic principles, with careful, largely manual cultivation and hand-harvesting to ensure only perfectly healthy, ripe grapes are selected. In the cellar, Weiser-Künstler relies on spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts and maturation in traditional 1,000-liter Fuder casks, allowing the wine to develop slowly on its lees without excessive intervention. This minimalist approach preserves the purity of fruit, the striking slate-derived minerality and the authentic character of its terroir.
Food & Serving
This bone-dry Mosel Riesling is a superb partner for delicate yet flavorful dishes: think ceviche, oysters, sashimi, steamed white fish with herbs, or simple grilled prawns with lemon. It also works beautifully with lightly spiced Asian cuisine, fresh goat’s cheese, and vegetable-based dishes such as asparagus, fennel or herb-driven salads. Serve well-chilled at around 8–10°C. Due to its youthful reduction and tight structure, it benefits from a brief decant of 30–60 minutes or at least a generous swirl in the glass to fully reveal its finesse and aromatic clarity.
