Crafted by Weingut Kurt Wolf, this wine captures the balance of ripeness, freshness and minerality that has made Pfalz Riesling so beloved. It’s an elegant, food-friendly white that offers both immediate pleasure and the structure to evolve in bottle.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Riesling im Großen Garten shows a pale straw-yellow color with greenish reflections, signaling youthful freshness and vibrancy. The nose is expressive yet precise, with aromas of lime zest, green apple and white peach layered over hints of white flowers, wet stone and a subtle herbal lift typical of cool-climate Riesling. On the palate, this wine is dry to off-dry in style, with a crisp, linear acidity that carries flavors of citrus, crunchy orchard fruit and a touch of ripe stone fruit. A fine slate-like minerality runs through the core, adding tension and length. The finish is clean, refreshing and slightly salty, inviting another sip. 2021 is a cooler, more classic vintage in many parts of Germany, and this wine shows that with its finesse and precision. It will drink beautifully now for its brightness and energy, but it also has the structure to develop further complexity over the next 3–6 years, gaining more honeyed and petrol notes with time.
Production
The Riesling im Großen Garten is sourced from the Pfalz, a region known for its relatively warm, dry climate and diverse soils, often composed of sandstone, loam and limestone—with pockets of gravel and loess that help build both ripeness and finesse. The “Großen Garten” parcel benefits from good sun exposure and well-draining soils, which allow the Riesling grapes to ripen slowly while retaining their natural acidity. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to ensure careful selection of only the healthiest, optimally ripe bunches. In the cellar, Weingut Kurt Wolf follows a gentle, low-intervention approach: the fruit is softly pressed, the must is cool-fermented in stainless steel to preserve aromatic purity, and the wine is left on fine lees for a period to enhance texture and complexity before bottling. Oak, if used at all, is minimal, keeping the focus firmly on fruit and terroir.
Food & Serving
This Pfalz Riesling is extremely versatile at the table. It pairs beautifully with seafood—think grilled prawns, scallops, sushi and ceviche—as well as lightly spiced Asian dishes, Vietnamese cuisine or Thai salads with lime and coriander. It also complements white meats like roast chicken or turkey, fresh goat’s cheese, and vegetarian dishes featuring asparagus, fennel or fresh herbs. Serve well-chilled at around 8–10 °C to highlight its vibrant acidity and citrus notes. Decanting is generally not necessary, but opening the bottle 15–20 minutes before serving allows the aromatics to unfurl nicely.
