Sourced from deep loam soils in the famed Rhodter Klosterpfad vineyard in the Pfalz, this is a powerful yet finely etched red that can stand alongside serious Rhône benchmarks. Combining German precision with Syrah’s natural intensity, it showcases a cooler-climate elegance that many modern Rhône wines now aspire to.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a deep, vibrant ruby colour with a purple rim, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose opens with dark berries—blackberry, black cherry and mulberry—layered with notes of cracked black pepper, violets, smoked bacon and a touch of graphite. Subtle tones of cocoa, cedar and sweet spice reflect its time in barrique without overwhelming the fruit. On the palate, this Syrah is juicy yet precise, with a core of ripe dark fruit supported by lively acidity and fine-grained, well-integrated tannins. Savoury elements—olive tapenade, black pepper and a faint smokiness—add complexity, while a cool, herbal lift brings finesse and length to the finish. There is impressive balance between power and elegance, making the wine both charming now and structured enough to age. Expect it to develop further tertiary nuances—leather, tobacco and more pronounced savoury spice—over the next 8–12 years, with a drinking window comfortably extending through the early 2030s.
Production
Rhodter Klosterpfad lies in the southern Pfalz, where a relatively mild, sunny climate meets deep, nutrient-rich loam soils that retain water and encourage steady ripening—ideal conditions for a later-ripening variety like Syrah in this part of Germany. The grapes for this cuvée come from carefully selected parcels and were hand-harvested with strict selection in the vineyard to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy fruit made it into the winery. After destemming, the must underwent a maceration of just over two weeks, allowing for gentle extraction of colour, flavour and tannin. Fermentation was carried out spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, underscoring Stefan Meyer’s low-intervention approach and giving the wine added complexity and a strong sense of place. The young wine then matured for 14 months in barrique, where it gained texture, aromatic depth and polish while retaining a clear, vibrant fruit profile.
Food & Serving
This Pfalz Syrah is an excellent partner for hearty, flavourful dishes. Think roast lamb with rosemary, braised beef cheeks, duck breast with a dark berry reduction, or grilled venison with root vegetables. It also pairs beautifully with charcuterie, aged hard cheeses, and dishes that feature smoky or peppery components, such as grilled aubergine or mushroom ragout. Serve at 16–18°C to highlight both its fruit and spice, and consider decanting for 30–60 minutes, especially in its youth, to allow the aromatics to unfold and the tannins to soften.
