Sourced from vineyards around the historic village of Hallgarten, it offers a fine balance of ripe fruit, lively acidity and minerality. This wine showcases why Rheingau is considered one of the great traditional homes of Riesling, where steep slopes and cool nights deliver both elegance and intensity.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the Hallgartener Riesling 2023 shines a pale straw to light lemon color with green reflections, signaling its youth and freshness. The nose is expressive yet refined, with aromas of crisp green apple, lime zest and white peach interwoven with notes of white flowers, crushed slate and a hint of herbal spice. On the palate, the wine is light to medium-bodied with a precise, linear structure. Juicy citrus (lemon, lime) and green apple are layered with stone fruit, while a distinct mineral backbone and bright acidity carry the flavors through a clean, persistent finish. Subtle saline and flinty notes give extra complexity, making each sip both refreshing and detailed. Enjoyable now for its youthful vibrancy, it has the structure and acidity to develop further complexity over the next 3–6 years, gaining more honeyed and smoky nuances with bottle age.
Production
The Hallgartener Riesling 2023 comes from vineyards in Hallgarten, one of the higher-elevation sites in the Rheingau, where cool, breezy conditions and well-drained soils of slate, quartzite and loess help Riesling ripen slowly and retain excellent acidity. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to ensure careful selection and optimal ripeness, often in multiple passes through the vineyard to pick only the healthiest, most aromatic fruit. In the cellar, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks to preserve the purity of the fruit and the clarity of terroir expression; the wine then rests on its fine lees for added texture and aromatic complexity before gentle filtration and bottling.
Food & Serving
This Rheingau Riesling is a versatile partner at the table, pairing beautifully with delicate seafood such as poached white fish, sushi, prawns and scallops, as well as with lighter poultry dishes, fresh goat cheese, and vibrant salads with citrus or herb dressings. Its lively acidity and subtle sweetness make it a natural match for mildly spiced Asian cuisine, especially dishes featuring ginger, lemongrass or light chili heat. Serve well-chilled at about 8–10°C; decanting is generally not necessary, but giving the wine a few minutes in the glass helps the aromatics fully open.
