Sourced from a tiny, south-facing parcel within the Langenberg, this ‘Großes Gewächs’ (Grand Cru equivalent) captures the full intensity of old vines rooted deep in stony Muschelkalk. The legendary “Himmelspfad” – the ‘path to heaven’ that runs through the vineyard – has long been associated with the souls of winemakers ascending to the skies, and there is certainly something almost ethereal in the glass.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine is a bright, luminous straw yellow with greenish reflections, hinting at both ripeness and freshness. The nose is immediately refined and mineral-driven: crushed limestone, wet stone and chalk meet aromas of ripe pear, quince and yellow apple, with subtle notes of meadow herbs, fennel seed and a delicate smokiness from long lees contact. On the palate, the Himmelspfad Großes Gewächs is taut yet generous, combining impressive depth with a laser-like precision. A core of juicy stone and orchard fruits is wrapped in a firm saline backbone, with nuances of citrus zest, chamomile and lightly roasted nuts. The texture is silky but tightly woven, driven by vibrant acidity and the distinctive grip of Muschelkalk. The finish is very long, stony and pure, promising excellent aging potential: while already captivating in its youth, this 2022 will gain complexity and tertiary nuances over 8–12 years and beyond.
Production
The Himmelspfad parcel sits in the warmest, fully south-facing section of the broader Langenberg site in Franken, on steep slopes with up to 65% gradient. Here, thick-trunked Silvaner vines planted in the early 1960s dig deep into poor, fossil-rich Muschelkalk (shell limestone), giving naturally low yields and exceptional concentration. For almost 15 years, the May family has tended these vines, and for around a decade the site has been farmed certified organically, with meticulous hand work the only option on this demanding hillside. Harvest is carried out entirely by hand, with strict selection of perfectly ripe but not overripe grapes. In the cellar, Rudolf May follows a gentle, minimalist approach: careful pressing, spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, and extended maturation on the lees (often in large traditional oak or neutral vessels) to enhance texture and complexity without masking the terroir. The result is a Großes Gewächs that speaks clearly of its origin.
Food & Serving
This Silvaner Großes Gewächs is a superb partner for refined, terroir-driven cuisine. It pairs beautifully with freshwater fish (trout, char, pike-perch), scallops, and subtly prepared shellfish, as well as white asparagus, veal in light cream sauces, roasted poultry, and mushroom dishes. Its mineral backbone and depth also make it an excellent match for mature hard cheeses and delicate, herb-accented vegetable plates. Serve at 10–12°C to let the aromatics unfold fully; in its youth, a brief decant of 30–45 minutes can help the wine open up, while older bottles can be served directly from the bottle with gentle handling.
Producer
Weingut Rudolf May is one of Franken’s leading modern estates, widely regarded for redefining what Silvaner can achieve on top limestone terroirs. Since taking over and steadily expanding the family domaine, Rudolf May has focused relentlessly on expressing origin, elevating old-vine parcels like Himmelspfad to Großes Gewächs status. Organic certification, low yields and uncompromising hand work in steep vineyards have placed the estate among the region’s benchmarks. With numerous accolades from German wine critics and guides, May has become a reference for precise, mineral-driven Silvaner that can stand confidently alongside the world’s finest terroir wines.
