This cuvée combines Volnay’s hallmark finesse with the precision and freshness of a carefully handled modern Burgundy. It’s a standout choice for those seeking a graceful, terroir-driven red that balances purity of fruit with classic old-world charm.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Volnay shows a luminous, medium ruby color with youthful violet highlights at the rim. The nose is delicately perfumed yet precise, offering aromas of ripe red cherries, wild strawberries and crushed raspberries, layered with notes of rose petals, violets, subtle spice, and a gentle hint of forest floor and fine oak. On the palate, the wine is supple and silky, with a fine-boned structure and a refreshing line of acidity that carries the fruit gracefully across the tongue. Red berry fruit dominates, supported by undertones of redcurrant, a touch of cranberry, and a whisper of savory herbs and minerality. The tannins are very fine and chalky, giving texture without harshness, and the finish is long, lifted and pure, with lingering notes of cherry and floral spice. Enjoyable now with a bit of air for its vibrant, youthful fruit, this 2022 also has the structure to evolve beautifully over the next 6–10 years, gaining complexity and further aromatic nuance.
Production
Domaine Bzikot Sylvain crafts this Volnay from Pinot Noir grown on classic Burgundian limestone-clay soils, which lend both aromatic finesse and mineral tension to the wine. The vineyards are tended with careful, sustainable practices, with an emphasis on controlling yields and harvesting by hand at optimal ripeness to preserve freshness and balance. In the cellar, the grapes are carefully sorted, then vinified in temperature-controlled vats with a gentle extraction to showcase Volnay’s natural elegance rather than power. The wine is aged in French oak barrels—typically with a restrained proportion of new oak—to add subtle spice and texture while keeping the focus firmly on purity of fruit and terroir expression.
Food & Serving
This Volnay is an excellent partner for refined, delicate dishes where its finesse can shine. Think roast chicken with herbs, duck breast with cherries, veal tenderloin, or lightly seasoned pork loin. It also works beautifully with mushroom-based dishes, truffle pasta, and soft to semi-hard cheeses such as Brie, Comté, or mild goat cheese. Serve at around 14–16°C to highlight the wine’s aromatic complexity and freshness. Decanting for 30–45 minutes in its youth can help open up the bouquet and soften the structure, especially if enjoyed within the first few years after release.
