Crafted from Nerello Mascalese, it bridges the freshness of a coastal rosé with the structure and nuance of a serious, terroir-driven wine. This is a rosato for those who appreciate delicacy, minerality and a distinct sense of place in the glass.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Terre Nere Etna Rosato 2024 shows a very pale, shimmering salmon hue with copper-pink highlights—almost Provence-like in color, but unmistakably Etna in personality. The nose is clean and refined, with notes of wild strawberry, blood orange zest, pomegranate, white peach and a whisper of rose petals, layered over smoky volcanic stone, saline hints and delicate Mediterranean herbs. On the palate, the wine is tense and mouthwatering rather than overtly fruity, with a fine, linear structure. Red currant, pink grapefruit and citrus blossom lead the way, supported by a chalky, volcanic minerality and a subtle savory undercurrent reminiscent of sea spray and crushed thyme. The acidity is bright and precise, giving the wine lift and a long, saline finish. While absolutely delicious now for its vibrancy and precision, this rosato has the backbone to evolve gracefully over the next 2–3 years, gaining a bit more texture and complexity with short-term cellaring.
Production
Sourced from high-altitude vineyards on the northern slopes of Mount Etna, Terre Nere Etna Rosato 2024 reflects a unique terroir of decomposed volcanic ash, lava stones and mineral-rich sands. These slopes benefit from wide diurnal temperature swings, preserving acidity and aromatic intensity in the Nerello Mascalese grapes. The vines are largely bush-trained or grown on old terraces, often farmed organically with a strong focus on careful, manual work in the vineyard. Grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness to retain freshness, then gently pressed to obtain a pale, delicately colored must. Fermentation typically takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks to preserve pure fruit and floral aromatics, followed by a short period on fine lees to add texture and polish without sacrificing Etna’s hallmark tension and clarity.
Food & Serving
Terre Nere Etna Rosato 2024 is highly versatile at the table, pairing beautifully with crudo and carpaccio of fish, grilled prawns, octopus salads, and simple seafood pasta with olive oil and lemon. It also works wonderfully with Sicilian dishes like caponata, grilled vegetables, fresh goat cheese, charcuterie and lighter poultry preparations. Serve well-chilled, ideally around 8–10 °C (46–50 °F), to highlight its precision and mineral edge. Decanting is not necessary, but pouring the wine into larger glasses and giving it a few minutes in the glass will allow the subtle smoky, herbal notes to unfold.
Producer
Tenuta delle Terre Nere is one of the pioneering estates that helped put Mount Etna on the modern fine-wine map. Founded and led by Marco de Grazia, the winery was among the first to recognize and champion the extraordinary potential of Etna’s old vines and fragmented crus, drawing comparisons to the great terroirs of Burgundy. Working primarily on the cooler, northern slopes of the volcano, Terre Nere focuses on organic farming, low yields and precise, site-expressive winemaking. The estate has earned international acclaim for its transparent, mineral-driven reds and refined rosato, and is widely regarded as a benchmark producer in the Etna DOC, playing a key role in the region’s rise to global prominence.
