Produced by one of Marsannay’s most respected vignerons, this cuvée offers a beautifully honest expression of place, with vibrant fruit, fine structure and real finesse. It’s an ideal bottle for those looking to explore top-quality Burgundy without venturing into grand cru pricing.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Marsannay shows a translucent, ruby-red color with a youthful, bright rim. The nose is immediately inviting, with lifted aromas of wild strawberry, red cherry and cranberry, layered with rose petal, crushed violets and a touch of blood orange. Subtle notes of wet stone, fine spices and a hint of underbrush emerge with air, speaking clearly of its Burgundian origins. On the palate, this is fresh, supple and precise rather than heavy, with juicy red fruits, redcurrant and pomegranate framed by finely etched tannins. The texture is silky but energetic, with a lively line of acidity that keeps everything focused and moreish. Hints of white pepper, dried herbs and a gentle, savory minerality carry through to a long, mouthwatering finish. While beautifully approachable in its youth, especially with a short decant, this 2023 has the structure to evolve gracefully over 5–8 years, gaining complexity and savoriness with time in bottle.
Production
Drawn from carefully tended vineyards in Marsannay at the northern gateway to the Côte de Nuits, this wine reflects a cool limestone-clay terroir that naturally favors finesse, freshness and aromatic lift. Sylvain Pataille farms organically (and biodynamically in many parcels), focusing on low yields and meticulous work in the vines to ensure healthy, perfectly ripe Pinot Noir fruit. Harvesting is done by hand, with careful sorting to retain only the best bunches. In the cellar, Pataille follows a minimally interventionist approach: gentle extraction, a thoughtful proportion of whole clusters depending on the vintage, and fermentation with native yeasts. Aging typically takes place in a mix of mostly used French oak barrels, allowing the wine’s purity and sense of place to shine without overt oak imprint.
Food & Serving
This Marsannay 2023 is wonderfully versatile at the table. It pairs beautifully with roast chicken, duck breast, herb-crusted pork, grilled lamb chops and earthy dishes featuring mushrooms or lentils. It also complements semi-soft cheeses like Comté, Tomme de Savoie or a mild goat cheese, and is an excellent match for simple charcuterie boards. Serve lightly chilled for a red Burgundy, ideally around 14–16°C (57–61°F). A brief decant of 30–45 minutes helps the aromatics unfurl and the tannins soften, especially in its first few years after release.
Producer
Sylvain Pataille is one of the key figures behind the modern renaissance of Marsannay, the northernmost appellation of the Côte de Nuits. Starting his domaine in the late 1990s with just a few hectares, he has grown into a benchmark producer, known for meticulous organic farming and a deep commitment to expressing individual terroirs. Working as both vigneron and consulting oenologist, Pataille has played a significant role in elevating the reputation of Marsannay from an under-the-radar name to a serious source of high-quality Burgundy. His range of wines—from regional cuvées to single-vineyard bottlings—is widely admired by sommeliers and collectors alike for their purity, precision and authenticity.
