Crafted from Grüner Veltliner grown on the famous Lamm vineyard, this wine combines ripe concentration with the crisp precision that makes Austrian Grüner so sought-after. It’s a sophisticated, food-friendly white that shows both immediate charm and the structure to evolve beautifully in bottle.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Lamm presents a bright, pale to medium straw-yellow color with greenish highlights, hinting at its freshness and youth. The nose is expressive and layered, opening with ripe pear, yellow apple, and white peach, followed by classic Grüner notes of white pepper, fennel, and a touch of tobacco leaf. Subtle nuances of wet stone, citrus zest, and a hint of fresh herbs add complexity as it opens in the glass. On the palate, this is a concentrated yet finely structured Grüner Veltliner, with a generous, almost creamy mid-palate balanced by vibrant, mouthwatering acidity. Flavors of stone fruit, ripe citrus, and juicy pear are wrapped in a delicate spiciness – think white pepper, a touch of ginger, and a faint smokiness from the Lamm terroir. The finish is long, dry, and saline, leaving a clean, spicy-mineral impression. Enjoyable now for its primary fruit and energy, the 2022 has the backbone to develop additional complexity over the next 5–8 years, gaining more nutty and honeyed nuances with careful cellaring.
Production
The Lamm vineyard is one of Kamptal’s most revered sites, situated on the southeastern slopes of the Heiligenstein massif, where warm days and cool nights help Grüner Veltliner ripen fully while retaining excellent acidity. The soils are rich in loess and loam over underlying primary rock, lending both power and a distinctive mineral character to the wine. Steininger works with careful, selective hand-harvesting to ensure only optimally ripe and healthy grapes make it to the cellar. After gentle pressing, the must is typically fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel to preserve purity and freshness, followed by aging on fine lees to build texture and depth, while keeping oak influence discreet or absent so that the vineyard character and varietal spice can shine.
Food & Serving
This is a versatile gastronomic white that excels at the table. Its depth and spice make it a superb match for veal schnitzel, roast chicken with herbs, or pork loin with root vegetables. It also pairs beautifully with richer seafood dishes such as grilled turbot, scallops, or lobster, and stands up well to Asian-inspired cuisine with ginger, lemongrass, or light curry accents. Classic Austrian pairings include Wiener Schnitzel and Tafelspitz. Serve at 10–12°C to highlight both the freshness and the layered fruit; a light decant of 20–30 minutes can help the wine open up aromatically, especially in its youth, revealing more spice and mineral notes.
