Focused, vibrant and utterly drinkable, it delivers real character without ever feeling heavy. This bottling showcases Kamptal’s cool-climate elegance with a clean, precise style that highlights fruit, spice and freshness in equal measure. Its key distinction lies in the classic Grüner Veltliner profile: peppery aromatics, fresh green notes and juicy orchard fruit, all framed by lively acidity and stainless-steel purity. The 2024 vintage comes from well-situated vineyards around Langenlois, where higher-altitude sites and stony soils give extra lift and minerality. Grüner Veltliner has long been considered Austria’s national grape, and Kamptal is one of the regions that helped build its reputation for producing food-friendly, refined and age-worthy dry whites.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Steininger Grüner Veltliner Kamptal 2024 shows a pale straw-yellow color with green reflections, signaling freshness and youth. The nose is immediately inviting, with classic notes of white pepper, green pepper, freshly cut grass and crunchy celery, layered with hints of honey and subtle floral nuances. These savory-green aromatics give the wine a distinctive, lively character that is unmistakably Grüner. On the palate, it is dry, bright and precise, with flavors of ripe orchard fruit – especially fresh pear and crisp apple – supported by a firm, refreshing acidity. The wine feels clean and linear, with a slight spiciness from the white pepper and a gentle, honeyed roundness that softens the edges without adding sweetness. The finish is long, mineral and mouthwatering, leaving a pleasantly zesty impression. Vinified and aged in stainless steel, this Grüner Veltliner is designed for early enjoyment in its first 2–4 years, though its acidity and structure will allow it to hold and develop a bit more complexity over the short term.
Production
The grapes for this Grüner Veltliner come from vineyards around Langenlois in Kamptal, where the Kamp river and its higher-lying hills create a cool yet sunny microclimate. Soils here range from loess to stony, well-drained sites in the higher elevations, giving the wines both ripeness and a distinct mineral backbone. The cooler nights help preserve acidity and the variety’s trademark peppery freshness. Grapes are harvested at optimal ripeness to balance ripe fruit character with bright, natural acidity. After careful selection, the fruit is gently pressed to avoid bitterness, and the juice is fermented in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks to preserve the pure, primary aromas of Grüner Veltliner. The wine is then aged on its fine lees in steel, which adds a touch of texture and complexity while maintaining a very clean, precise profile with no influence from oak.
Food & Serving
This Kamptal Grüner Veltliner is an exceptionally versatile food wine. Its freshness and subtle spice make it a natural partner for fish dishes, from simply grilled white fish to more aromatic preparations, as well as shellfish such as prawns, mussels and scallops. It also pairs beautifully with charcuterie, light cured meats and terrines, and is excellent alongside vegetable-focused dishes, especially steamed or sautéed greens, asparagus, artichokes or lightly roasted root vegetables. Try it with fresh goat’s cheese or mild soft cheeses for a classic match. Serve well-chilled, ideally at 8–10°C (46–50°F), to emphasize its crispness and aromatic lift. Decanting is not necessary; this is a wine best enjoyed for its youthful energy and clarity. Simply open the bottle a few minutes before serving and pour into medium-sized white wine glasses to allow the aromas to unfold.
