Hand-harvested from top Kamptal vineyards, this cuvée balances freshness and elegance with layered fruit and a precise, vibrant acidity. As part of Steininger’s top range, Grand Grü has helped underline Kamptal’s reputation as a benchmark region for world-class Grüner Veltliner.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Grand Grü 2024 shows a bright, pale straw-yellow color with a subtle green shimmer that hints at its youthful energy and freshness. The nose is inviting and complex, opening with notes of crisp green apple and ripe pear, followed by nuances of green pepper, fresh herbs and meadow flowers, all wrapped in a delicate touch of honey and apricot. On the palate, the wine is relatively full-bodied for a Grüner Veltliner, with generous flavors of ripe orchard fruit and stone fruit supported by a fine, elegant acidity. It feels both juicy and refined, with the herbal and peppery spice typical of the variety adding definition. The texture is polished and persistent, leading into a long, clean, mineral-tinged finish. Enjoy it now for its vibrant fruit, or cellar it for 3–6 years to allow the honeyed and nutty notes to gain further complexity.
Production
The grapes for Grand Grü 2024 come from prime sites around Langenlois in Kamptal, where cool nights, warm days and well-drained hillside soils create ideal conditions for Grüner Veltliner with both ripeness and tension. The fruit is carefully hand-harvested, with strict selection of only the best bunches destined for this top cuvée. Fermentation takes place in acacia oak barrels, which lend subtle structure and aromatic complexity without overpowering the varietal character, followed by maturation in stainless-steel tanks to preserve precision, freshness and the wine’s clear, varietal expression.
Food & Serving
This Grüner Veltliner is a natural partner for fine seafood and fish dishes, from grilled sea bass and poached salmon to scallops or delicate shellfish preparations. It also pairs beautifully with light, white meats such as roast chicken, veal or pork, especially when accompanied by herbs, root vegetables or mild cream sauces, and it can handle gently spiced Asian cuisine. Serve well-chilled at around 9–11 °C. A short decant of 20–30 minutes in a carafe, or simply opening the bottle a little before serving, allows the aromatics to unfold fully.
Producer
Weingut Steininger is a family-run estate based in the picturesque wine town of Langenlois in Kamptal, just off the Danube, where some of Austria’s most characterful white wines are born. The Steininger vineyards climb the hillsides behind the town into higher-lying, cooler sites that deliver remarkable intensity, clarity and finesse in Grüner Veltliner and Riesling. Founded and guided by Karl and Brigitte Steininger and today supported by their daughter Eva on the commercial side, the estate is known not only for its still wines but also for its acclaimed traditional-method Sekts, produced from nearly all the grape varieties they grow. Together with a neighboring estate, they created the acclaimed Loisium wine experience and hotel, underscoring their role as ambassadors for Kamptal and modern Austrian wine on the international stage.
