Fully vinified in large, partly renewed oak casks, it marries depth and refinement with impressive power and complexity. This Grosses Gewächs (“GG”) from the famed Gräfenberg vineyard has long been a reference point for ageworthy Riesling, and the 2020 vintage continues that legacy with remarkable precision and elegance.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Kiedricher Gräfenberg GG shows a bright, pale lemon to light straw hue, with youthful green reflections hinting at its freshness and aging potential. The nose is deep, pure and beautifully refined, opening with layers of ripe citrus, white peach and mirabelle, framed by cool herbal notes and a clear imprint of high-quality oak: gentle spice, a touch of vanilla pod and a subtle smokiness. Compared to Weil’s Turmberg and Klosterberg GGs, the Gräfenberg is more generous and aromatically expansive, with the oak presence slightly more pronounced yet impeccably integrated. On the palate, this is an exceptionally elegant and finely balanced dry Riesling. The attack is supple and almost creamy, with a rounder, richer mouthfeel than Turmberg, despite analytically lower residual sugar. Juicy stone fruits, Meyer lemon and kumquat are underpinned by a firm, vibrating acidity and a distinctly salty, mineral backbone that speaks clearly of the phyllite-rich soils. There is impressive concentration without heaviness, and the wine fans out across the palate with great length and clarity, finishing with a lingering saline snap and delicate spice. Still youthful, it is already harmonious, but will gain in finesse, transparency and detail over the next decade and beyond. Properly stored, this 2020 Gräfenberg GG should evolve beautifully for 10–15+ years.
Production
Kiedricher Gräfenberg is one of the Rheingau’s most prized steep hillside vineyards, with a south to southwest exposure, excellent drainage and a complex mix of phyllite slate, loess and clay that naturally yields low quantities of intensely flavored grapes. The loess-clay components contribute to the site’s characteristic richness and roundness, while the shallow, stone-rich sections ensure pronounced minerality and freshness. Grapes for this GG are meticulously hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, parcel by parcel, to preserve both fruit purity and site character. In the cellar, the must is gently pressed and fermented and matured exclusively in large, traditional wooden casks (Stück and Doppelstück), some of which are newly renewed, adding a discreet oak-derived spice and structure without overshadowing the Riesling. The 2020 was given extended élevage, released a full year later than previous vintages, allowing the wine to knit together, gain polish and better express its cool-climate terroir.
Food & Serving
This is a superb gastronomic Riesling, versatile enough to accompany refined dishes yet powerful enough to stand up to rich flavors. It pairs wonderfully with fine seafood such as turbot, halibut or sea bass, particularly when prepared with beurre blanc, citrus or delicate herb sauces. It also shines alongside shellfish (lobster, scallops), veal in light cream sauces, roasted poultry, and sophisticated Asian cuisine—think sashimi, gently spiced Thai or Japanese-inspired dishes with yuzu or ginger. Mature hard cheeses and aged goat’s cheeses also work beautifully with its salty-mineral drive. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) in a high-quality white wine or Riesling stem. Young bottles will benefit from 30–60 minutes in a carafe to allow the oak notes and minerality to unfold; older vintages can be served straight from the bottle, carefully poured to avoid disturbing any sediment.
