This is a richly textured, polished red that balances power with precision, offering immediate pleasure with the structure to reward cellaring. Crafted from meticulously selected Cabernet fruit and aged entirely in new French oak, it delivers a luxurious expression of modern American Cabernet with a distinct Pacific Northwest identity. Since its founding in 1978, Quilceda Creek has been a driving force in putting Washington’s Columbia Valley on the world map for top-tier Cabernet Sauvignon. Multiple 100-point scores and a long track record of collectible, ageworthy wines make this release part of a storied lineage that serious collectors and enthusiasts seek year after year.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon is deep, saturated ruby to nearly opaque at the core, with a vivid, youthful rim that hints at its concentration and longevity. Swirl the glass and you’re met with a plush, silky, and expansive nose: ripe blackcurrant and blackberry compote intertwined with dark plum, graphite, and black cherry, layered with notes of cedar shavings, cocoa nib, espresso, and sweet baking spices from its time in 100% new French oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet poised, combining richness with a fresh, lifted core. There’s a cascade of dark fruit—cassis, black cherry, and blueberry—wrapped in fine-grained, polished tannins that give a firm but velvety frame. Hints of tobacco leaf, dark chocolate, and clove emerge with air, while a subtle savory minerality keeps the finish vibrant and food-friendly. The structure is balanced and energetic, with lifting acidity and tannins that carry the mid-palate into a long, evolving finish. While already alluring, this 2020 will benefit from another 2–3 years in bottle and should continue to develop gracefully for 15–20 years under proper cellaring.
Production
The Cabernet Sauvignon for this wine is sourced from select, high-performing vineyard sites in Washington’s Columbia Valley, an area renowned for its warm days, cool nights and well-drained, glacial and volcanic soils. These conditions allow Cabernet grapes to ripen fully while preserving freshness and aromatic intensity, contributing to the wine’s depth and balance. Grapes are carefully hand-harvested at optimal ripeness and sorted with meticulous attention to detail to ensure only the finest berries make it into the final blend. In the cellar, Quilceda Creek employs precision-driven, small-lot vinification with temperature-controlled fermentations to extract pure fruit, supple tannins, and complexity. The wine is then aged for 22 months in 100% new French oak barrels, which lend polish, structure, and subtle spice without overwhelming the character of the fruit. Just 5,450 cases were produced, underscoring its status as a limited, collector-worthy bottling.
Food & Serving
This Cabernet’s generous fruit, refined tannins, and well-integrated oak make it a superb partner for rich, savory dishes. Think grilled or pan-seared ribeye, roast lamb with rosemary and garlic, short ribs braised in red wine, or a classic chateaubriand. It also pairs beautifully with dishes featuring wild mushrooms, truffle accents, or aged cheeses such as Comté, aged cheddar, or Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F) for best expression. Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth will help the aromatics open and soften the tannins; more mature bottles may need a shorter decant, just enough to let the wine unfurl in the glass.
