This Premier Cru marries purity, precision and depth, showcasing the finesse that has made Puligny-Montrachet a benchmark for great Chardonnay. In the generous yet balanced 2023 vintage, it offers immediate charm with the structure to reward time in the cellar. Clos de la Pucelle is a historic, stone-walled monopole of Domaine Jean Chartron, sitting in the heart of Puligny’s Premier Cru slope and benefiting from outstanding exposure and chalk-rich soils. The wine stands out for its crystalline minerality, finely judged oak and harmonious concentration, echoing generations of savoir-faire in one of Burgundy’s most storied villages.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Clos De La Pucelle shows a luminous, pale straw-gold hue with green reflections, signaling its youth and freshness. The nose is detailed and layered: notes of lemon zest, white peach and crisp pear are joined by white flowers, fresh almond and a subtle hint of acacia honey. With a little air, more complex tones emerge—wet stone, flint, a touch of hazelnut and fine, integrated vanilla from élevage in quality oak. On the palate, this Puligny 1er Cru is precise and silky, with a vibrant, chalk-driven core. Ripe stone fruit and citrus mingle with nuances of brioche, toasted hazelnut and a saline edge that stretches the finish. The acidity is lively but finely woven, giving great length without any harshness. While already approachable in its youth for those who enjoy tension and energy, the wine has the structure to evolve beautifully over 8–15 years, gaining additional complexity, creaminess and tertiary notes of honey, dried flowers and nuts with careful cellaring.
Production
Clos De La Pucelle is a walled Premier Cru monopole in Puligny-Montrachet, lying on well-drained, limestone-rich soils with bands of fine clay that naturally limit yields and enhance concentration. Domaine Jean Chartron farms these Chardonnay vines with close attention to the environment, using sustainable, low-intervention practices and harvesting exclusively by hand to ensure pristine fruit selection in the vineyard. The grapes are gently pressed and the must is allowed to settle before fermenting in French oak barrels, a proportion of which are new to bring subtle structure rather than overt woodiness. The wine typically undergoes aging on fine lees with bâtonnage as needed, adding texture and complexity, then is matured for around a year in barrel before final blending and bottling, preserving the vineyard’s hallmark tension and minerality.
Food & Serving
This Puligny 1er Cru is an outstanding partner for refined dishes such as butter-poached lobster, seared scallops, turbot or sole with beurre blanc, and roasted chicken with morels or truffled cream sauce. It also pairs beautifully with veal in a light cream reduction, rich shellfish pastas, and fine cheeses like aged Comté, Beaufort or delicate goat’s cheeses. Serve lightly chilled at 10–12 °C (50–54 °F) to allow the aromas and texture to fully express themselves. In its youth, decanting for 30–45 minutes can help the wine open up and reveal more of its floral and mineral complexity; older bottles should be handled gently and may be served straight from the bottle after a brief rest.
Producer
Domaine Jean Chartron, founded in 1859, is one of the historic family estates in Puligny-Montrachet and has played a key role in building the village’s worldwide reputation for great white Burgundy. The Chartron family was instrumental in adding "Montrachet" to the village name in the 19th century, underlining the importance of its grand and premier cru vineyards. Today, the domaine is run by the fifth generation, who combine deep-rooted tradition with modern precision in the cellar and a strong commitment to sustainable viticulture. With holdings in some of Puligny’s most revered climats—including Clos de la Pucelle, Clos du Cailleret and Chevalier-Montrachet—Domaine Jean Chartron is widely respected for producing wines of energy, purity and ageworthy elegance that rank among the benchmarks of the Côte de Beaune.
