Elegant, precise and wonderfully balanced, it combines the structure of Pinot Noir, the fruit of Pinot Meunier and the finesse of Chardonnay in equal harmony. Long associated with statesmen and connoisseurs—Winston Churchill famously favored Pol Roger—this cuvée offers a classic, timeless expression of Champagne.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Pol Roger Brut Réserve shows a bright, pale golden hue with a fine, persistent mousse and lively streams of tiny bubbles. The nose is refined and inviting, with notes of ripe orchard fruits (pear, apple), white flowers and hints of brioche, fresh pastry and almond, underpinned by touches of lemon zest and chalky minerality. On the palate, it is dry, crisp and beautifully balanced, with a creamy texture from extended lees aging. Flavors of citrus, green apple and stone fruit unfold alongside subtle nuances of honey, roasted nuts and buttery brioche. The finish is long, clean and mineral-driven, with a refreshing salinity that invites another sip. Enjoyed now, it shows excellent vibrancy and complexity, but it also has the structure to develop additional toasty, nutty notes over 3–5 years in the cellar.
Production
Pol Roger Brut Réserve is sourced from a selection of top vineyards across the Champagne region, with fruit drawn largely from the premier and grand cru villages on the chalk-rich slopes that give Champagne its hallmark tension and minerality. Grapes are harvested by hand to ensure optimal selection of healthy, perfectly ripe clusters. Each grape variety and vineyard parcel is vinified separately in temperature-controlled stainless steel to preserve freshness and purity, before the final blend is assembled using a significant proportion of reserve wines to maintain the classic Pol Roger style. The wine then undergoes secondary fermentation in bottle and ages on its lees for an extended period—typically longer than the appellation minimum—resulting in extra creaminess, finesse and complexity.
Food & Serving
Pol Roger Brut Réserve is exceptionally versatile at the table. It pairs beautifully with oysters, prawns, scallops and other fresh seafood, as well as sushi, sashimi and lightly fried tempura. It also complements creamy cheeses, charcuterie, roast chicken, delicate white fish dishes and even lightly spiced Asian cuisine. Serve well-chilled at 8–10°C (46–50°F) in a tulip-shaped Champagne glass to focus its aromas and preserve the mousse. A brief 5–10 minutes open in the glass is sufficient; full decanting is generally not necessary, though opening the bottle a touch early will allow the wine to unfurl its brioche and floral notes.
Producer
Founded in 1849 in Épernay, Pol Roger remains one of the few great Champagne houses that is still family-owned and fiercely independent. Over generations, the estate has built a reputation for impeccably crafted, classically styled Champagnes that emphasize elegance, precision and consistency. Pol Roger holds a special place in Champagne’s history, not least due to its longstanding association with Sir Winston Churchill, who famously adopted it as his preferred Champagne and later inspired the house’s prestige cuvée. Today, Pol Roger is regarded as a benchmark producer in the region, regularly earning critical acclaim and serving as a reference point for lovers of fine, traditional Champagne.
