Crafted exclusively from grapes grown in Grand and Premier Cru vineyards, this is a structured, ageworthy Champagne that brilliantly reflects the character of the excellent 2018 harvest. Presented in its elegant gift box (étui), it’s an ideal choice for special occasions, collectors, or as a standout gift.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Pol Roger Brut 2018 shines with a bright, pale gold hue and a fine, persistent bead of tiny bubbles that signal its long maturation on the lees. The nose opens with notes of white blossom, lemon zest, crisp pear, and green apple, followed by layers of brioche, hazelnut, and a gentle chalky minerality that is quintessentially Champagne. On the palate, this cuvée is poised and energetic, with a vibrant acidity balanced by a creamy, rounded texture. Flavors of citrus, ripe stone fruits, and orchard apple mingle with toasted brioche, roasted almonds, and subtle spice, leading to a long, precise finish marked by saline minerality. Still youthful but already harmonious, the 2018 vintage has excellent aging potential; cellared under good conditions, it should continue to develop added complexity over 8–12 years or more.
Production
Pol Roger Brut Vintage 2018 is typically composed of a blend dominated by Pinot Noir with a significant proportion of Chardonnay (often around 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay), sourced from selected Grand and Premier Cru vineyards in the Montagne de Reims and the Côte des Blancs. These sites sit on classic chalk and limestone soils that lend tension, finesse, and minerality to the wine. The grapes are hand-harvested and sorted to ensure only the healthiest, ripest fruit is used. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel to preserve purity and freshness, with each grape variety and village vinified separately before blending. The wine then undergoes its secondary fermentation in bottle and is aged for several years on the lees in Pol Roger’s cool, deep cellars in Épernay, developing its fine mousse and complex autolytic character before a carefully judged dosage is added at disgorgement.
Food & Serving
This vintage Champagne is an outstanding partner for refined cuisine. Pair it with oysters, caviar, scallops, lobster, and other shellfish, or serve alongside sushi, sashimi, and delicately prepared white fish. It also works beautifully with roasted or poached poultry, veal in light cream sauces, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Parmigiano Reggiano. Serve well-chilled at around 8–10°C (46–50°F). For optimal expression, open the bottle a few minutes in advance; decanting is generally not necessary for Champagne, but pouring into larger-bowled flutes or white wine glasses will help the aromas open up.
Producer
Founded in 1849 in Épernay, Pol Roger remains one of the few great Champagne houses that is still family-owned and fiercely independent. Over the decades it has built a reputation for producing Champagnes of precision, elegance, and consistency, earning particular fame as the preferred Champagne of Sir Winston Churchill, a relationship that inspired the house’s celebrated prestige cuvée. With deep roots in the region and extensive holdings in some of Champagne’s finest vineyards, Pol Roger is widely regarded as a benchmark producer, known for long cellar aging, traditional methods, and a house style that balances richness and freshness with remarkable finesse.
