Elegant yet structured, it showcases the balance, depth and age-worthiness that have made Brunello a benchmark for fine Italian red wine. From a highly regarded vintage, this bottle offers both immediate pleasure and real cellaring potential. Founded in the 19th century, Azienda Agricola Pinino has long been part of the Montalcino landscape, crafting traditional Brunello that speaks clearly of place.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2016 Pinino Brunello di Montalcino shows a deep garnet core with bright ruby highlights along the rim—clear, vibrant and youthful for its age. The nose opens with classic Brunello signatures: ripe red cherries and wild strawberries, followed by dried roses, tobacco leaf and a hint of leather. Subtle notes of Mediterranean herbs, sweet spice and a touch of cedar emerge with air, adding complexity and refinement. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with a beautiful interplay between juicy Sangiovese fruit and firm, finely-grained tannins. Flavors of sour cherry, red plum and blood orange are layered with savory undertones of dried thyme, licorice and earthy mineral notes from Montalcino’s hillside soils. The acidity is vibrant and well-integrated, giving the wine lift and drive through a long, spicy, slightly saline finish. The 2016 vintage is known for its balance and freshness, and this wine reflects that—already harmonious, but with the structure to evolve gracefully for 10–15+ years in a good cellar.
Production
Pinino’s Brunello di Montalcino 2016 is sourced from estate vineyards set on the slopes around Montalcino, where a mix of galestro (crumbly marl), limestone and clay soils, combined with warm days and cool nights, allow Sangiovese to ripen slowly while retaining vibrant acidity. Grapes are harvested by hand, with careful bunch selection in the vineyard and again in the cellar to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy fruit is used. After a gentle crush and fermentation in temperature-controlled tanks, the wine undergoes a prolonged maceration on the skins to extract color, aroma and tannin in a measured, elegant way. It is then aged in large traditional oak casks (and possibly a portion in smaller barrels, depending on the cuvée) for several years, followed by additional bottle aging before release, as required by Brunello di Montalcino DOCG regulations, to ensure complexity and readiness on release.
Food & Serving
This Brunello is a natural partner for hearty Tuscan-inspired dishes and refined meat courses. It pairs beautifully with bistecca alla fiorentina, roast lamb with rosemary, game birds, braised beef or veal shank, and rich pasta dishes such as pappardelle al ragù di cinghiale (wild boar). Mature hard cheeses like aged Pecorino Toscano or Parmigiano-Reggiano also make an excellent match. Serve at around 18 °C (64 °F). For current drinking, decant 1–2 hours before serving to allow the aromas and structure to fully open; if cellared for additional years, a shorter decant will generally be sufficient.
