Grown in the Veneto region, this Syrah showcases the grape’s signature spicy character wrapped in Paladin’s hallmark elegance and approachability. Harvested at optimal ripeness, it offers generous fruit, refined structure, and a distinctly Mediterranean flair that sets it apart from more traditional Syrahs.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Paladin Syrah 2022 reveals a deep, intense ruby-red color with violet highlights, hinting at its youthful energy and concentration. The nose is immediately expressive, with blackberries, dark cherries, and plums layered over notes of black pepper, violets, and a touch of sweet spice—clove, cocoa, and a gentle hint of vanilla if oak is used subtly. On the palate, it’s smooth, generous, and medium to full-bodied, balancing ripe dark fruit with Syrah’s trademark peppery, savory edge. Supple tannins and fresh acidity keep the wine lively, while hints of Mediterranean herbs and licorice add complexity on the finish. Enjoyable now for its vibrant, juicy character, it has the structure to develop more tertiary notes—such as leather and dried fruit—over the next 3–5 years.
Production
Paladin sources its Syrah from carefully selected vineyard sites in the Veneto, where a combination of warm days, cooler nights, and well-drained soils help the grapes achieve full aromatic and phenolic ripeness while preserving freshness. The vines are managed to limit yields and concentrate flavor, and the grapes are harvested at optimum maturity to capture both varietal purity and richness. After careful sorting, the fruit is gently crushed and fermented at controlled temperatures to enhance color and aroma extraction. The wine is then matured—often partly in stainless steel to retain fruit brightness and, where used, partly in oak—to add structure and subtle spice without overwhelming the grape’s natural character.
Food & Serving
Paladin Syrah 2022 is a versatile partner at the table, pairing beautifully with grilled or roasted meats, such as lamb chops, beef tagliata, or herb-crusted pork. It also complements rich pasta dishes with ragù, hearty pizzas with spicy salami, and aged or semi-hard cheeses like pecorino and asiago. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both fruit and spice; a brief 30-minute decant can help the aromatics open up, especially in the first few years after release.
