Produced by Tenuta dell'Ornellaia in Bolgheri, this vintage delivers depth, precision and a seamless sense of luxury in the glass. Crafted from a Bordeaux-inspired blend and aged with meticulous care, it’s a collector-worthy wine that also offers immediate pleasure for those who open it young.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Ornellaia 2020 shows a deep, intense ruby color with almost opaque concentration and vibrant purple highlights at the rim. The nose is layered and expressive, opening with ripe dark berries—blackcurrant, blackberry and plum—wrapped in notes of violet, graphite, cedar and subtle tobacco, followed by hints of dark chocolate, Mediterranean herbs and a delicate spice from fine French oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and polished, with a velvety tannin structure that supports generous fruit without ever feeling heavy. Flavors of black cherry, cassis and ripe blueberry are interwoven with notes of licorice, espresso, sweet spice and a faint mineral edge that reflects its coastal origins. The balance between richness and freshness is a hallmark of Ornellaia, and the 2020 vintage shows a long, persistent finish with lingering notes of dark fruit and fine oak. While already approachable with some aeration, the firm yet refined tannins and vibrant acidity suggest excellent aging potential over 15–20 years, during which it will gain further complexity and nuance.
Production
Tenuta dell'Ornellaia is situated in Bolgheri on the Tuscan coast, where vineyards benefit from a unique maritime climate, abundant sunshine and well-drained, mixed soils of sand, clay and gravel. These conditions are ideal for Bordeaux varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, which typically form the backbone of Ornellaia. Grapes are hand-harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, with careful selection both in the vineyard and at the winery. After gentle crushing, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel and concrete tanks, with maceration tailored to each lot to extract color, flavor and fine-grained tannins. The wine is then aged in French oak barriques (a significant proportion new) for around 18 months, with separate lots matured individually before the final blend is composed. Following blending and further bottle aging, Ornellaia is released only when the estate deems it ready to express its character and complexity.
Food & Serving
Ornellaia 2020 is a natural partner for refined, richly flavored dishes. It pairs beautifully with grilled or roasted red meats—such as dry-aged ribeye, lamb chops or beef tenderloin—as well as game, braised short ribs and hearty dishes featuring truffle or wild mushrooms. Mature hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or aged Pecorino also complement its structure and depth. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Decanting is recommended—about 1–2 hours before serving in its youth—to allow the aromas to open and the tannins to soften, while older bottles will benefit from a more delicate, shorter decant to preserve their evolved bouquet.
