Produced from a tiny, historic monopole vineyard overlooking the Loire River, this dry white is revered for its depth, energy and ability to age gracefully for decades. The 2023 vintage continues the estate’s philosophy of minimal intervention, allowing terroir and vintage character to take center stage in the glass.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the Coulée de Serrant 2023 typically shows a deep, luminous straw to golden hue, reflecting both its concentration and traditional élevage. The nose is complex and layered, with notes of ripe orchard fruits (quince, baked apple, pear), citrus peel, honeycomb and lanolin, wrapped in hints of chamomile, beeswax, wet stone and a subtle oxidative nuttiness. With air, more savory nuances emerge: dried herbs, a touch of spice, and a gentle smokiness from the schist soils. On the palate, this Chenin Blanc is powerful yet tightly coiled, with a dense, textural mouthfeel balanced by a firm, saline backbone of acidity. Flavors of mirabelle plum, yellow apple, preserved lemon and acacia honey interplay with herbal, mineral and slightly bitter-grapefruit tones, giving great length and complexity. The finish is long, dry and persistent, with a lingering mineral grip and a sense of real structure. While already captivating in youth with proper aeration, Coulée de Serrant is built for the cellar; in a balanced vintage, it can evolve beautifully for 15–25 years or more, gaining tertiary notes of wax, spice, nuts and dried fruits.
Production
Coulée de Serrant is a seven-hectare monopole vineyard within Savennières, recognized as its own appellation and planted entirely to old-vine Chenin Blanc on steep, south- to southeast-facing slopes. The soils are predominantly schist with quartz and other volcanic elements, yielding wines of intense minerality and tension. Farmed according to strict biodynamic principles since the early 1980s, the vineyard is worked by hand (and often by horse on the steeper parcels), with extremely low yields and meticulous selection of only the healthiest, most concentrated grapes. Harvest is carried out manually in several passes, allowing for optimal ripeness and, in some years, a touch of noble botrytis. In the cellar, Nicolas Joly follows a philosophy of minimal intervention: indigenous yeast fermentations, little to no temperature control, and élevage in mostly used oak barrels, often on the lees, with minimal racking. Sulfur is used sparingly, and the wine is bottled without aggressive filtration, preserving its personality and capacity to age.
Food & Serving
Coulée de Serrant 2023 is a contemplative food wine that shines with rich, nuanced dishes. It pairs beautifully with roasted poultry (especially chicken or guinea fowl with morels), veal in cream sauces, lobster, scallops, and other refined shellfish preparations, as well as dishes featuring mushrooms, truffle, or aged hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda. It can also complement subtly spiced Asian cuisine where richness and umami take precedence over heat. Serve at 11–13°C (52–55°F) to balance freshness and aromatic complexity. Young bottles benefit greatly from a generous decant of 1–3 hours to open up and shed any initial reduction or firmness; mature examples should be decanted more gently and briefly, mainly to remove any sediment.
Producer
Clos de la Coulée de Serrant, led by the charismatic vigneron Nicolas Joly, is one of the most revered and distinctive estates in the Loire Valley—and indeed in the world of fine wine. The vineyard itself dates back to the 12th century, when Cistercian monks first planted vines on these steep slopes above the Loire, and it has been continuously cultivated ever since. Today, the domaine is synonymous with biodynamic viticulture; Joly was one of the earliest and most vocal champions of this philosophy, helping to inspire a global movement toward more sustainable, terroir-driven farming. As one of France’s rare single-estate appellations and a true monopole, Coulée de Serrant holds a unique place in the region’s hierarchy, regularly cited by critics and sommeliers as one of the greatest expressions of Chenin Blanc and a reference point for ageworthy, characterful white wines.
