Drawn from a notably warm vintage that showed unusual freshness in Rioja Alta, this Gran Reserva captures both ripe black fruit and complex, savory maturity. Bottled only in the finest years, Prado Enea is Muga’s most classical cuvée, and the 2011 has already gained a reputation as one of the standout vintages of the decade.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2011 Prado Enea Gran Reserva shows a deep, garnet core with brick-red reflections at the rim, a clear sign of its extended aging and slow evolution. The nose is complex and expressive: developed tertiary notes mingle with ripe black fruits, sweet baking spices, balsamic tones and hints of dried flowers. As it opens, layers of truffle, forest floor, cigar ash, incense and subtle vanilla emerge, giving an old-world, almost haunting aromatic profile. On the palate, this is a full-bodied yet refined Rioja, with polished, silky tannins and beautifully integrated acidity that keeps everything fresh. Flavors of dark cherry, plum and blackberry are wrapped in notes of cedar, tobacco leaf, cocoa and savory herbs. The long, persistent finish carries balsamic and earthy nuances, with a touch of smoke and leather that speaks to its long time in oak and bottle. Already wonderfully drinkable now from magnum, this is a wine with serious aging potential: expect it to evolve gracefully for another 10–15 years or more, gaining even greater complexity and harmony.
Production
Prado Enea Gran Reserva is sourced from high-altitude vineyards in the cooler zones of Rioja Alta, where clay-limestone soils and a mix of Atlantic and Mediterranean influences promote slow, even ripening and naturally high acidity. Grapes (predominantly Tempranillo with smaller portions of Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano) are picked by hand at optimal ripeness and carefully sorted to ensure only the best berries make it into the final blend. Fermentation takes place in large oak vats with a traditional, patient approach that emphasizes balance over power. The wine then undergoes an extended maturation of nearly 40 months in oak barrels before bottling in early 2015, followed by many years of bottle aging in Muga’s cellars. This long, gentle élevage is the hallmark of Prado Enea and the key to its seamless texture and classic Gran Reserva character.
Food & Serving
This 2011 Prado Enea Gran Reserva in magnum is a superb centerpiece for hearty, flavor-packed dishes: think slow-roasted lamb, ribeye or entrecôte, beef short ribs, game birds, or rich stews like ossobuco and braised oxtail. It also shines alongside aged Manchego, hard sheep’s cheeses, mushroom dishes, truffle risotto and charcuterie. Serve at 16–18°C to highlight its aromatic complexity and refined structure. Decanting is highly recommended: give it 1–2 hours in a decanter to allow the tertiary notes and spice to fully unfold, especially in magnum format where evolution in bottle is slower.
