Domaine Duband DavidMorey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Les Broc 2021 from Domaine David Duband is a refined, terroir-driven red Burgundy that showcases the poise and clarity of Pinot Noir in a cooler, classic vintage. This Premier Cru bottling stands out for its precision, lifted aromatics and fine-boned structure, capturing the signature balance between power and elegance that Morey-Saint-Denis is known for. Drawing on the domaine’s deep roots in the Côte de Nuits and its commitment to organic, low-intervention methods, this 2021 offers a beautifully transparent expression of site and season.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a luminous, medium ruby hue with delicate garnet highlights at the rim, reflecting its finesse rather than sheer density. The nose opens with pure red berries—wild strawberry, red cherry and redcurrant—interwoven with floral notes of rose petal and violets, and subtle hints of crushed stone, white pepper, and a touch of woodland undergrowth. On the palate, this Premier Cru is finely etched and precise, with juicy red and black cherry, raspberry and cranberry framed by a refined tannic spine. There is a clear mineral thread and a gentle savory complexity—dried herbs, a hint of spice, and a discreet touch of oak that adds structure rather than sweetness. The acidity is fresh and vibrant, giving the wine tension and lift, and the finish is long, graceful and delicately saline. While already approachable with air, the 2021 vintage has the structure to evolve nicely over 8–12 years, gaining additional depth, silkiness and tertiary complexity with bottle age.
Production
Les Broc is a Premier Cru climat in Morey-Saint-Denis, nestled on the mid-slope of the Côte de Nuits where thin, limestone-rich soils overlay clay and marl, providing an ideal balance of drainage, mineral tension and ripening potential for Pinot Noir. At Domaine David Duband, the vineyards are farmed organically, with careful canopy management, low yields and hand-harvesting to bring in perfectly sorted fruit at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, the domaine is known for its sensitive, minimalist approach: a high proportion of whole clusters is often used to enhance aromatic complexity and finesse of tannins, followed by a gentle fermentation with native yeasts. Aging typically takes place in French oak barrels—only a modest percentage new—to preserve purity of fruit and highlight the terroir, with minimal racking and careful handling before bottling with limited filtration.
Food & Serving
This Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru is a superb partner for refined, subtly prepared dishes: roasted duck breast with cherries, veal fillet with morel mushrooms, guinea fowl, or simply grilled lamb cutlets. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, mushroom risotto, truffled poultry, and aged but not overly powerful cheeses such as Comté, Tomme de Savoie or a mild Époisses. Serve at 14–16°C (57–61°F) to emphasize its aromatic lift and freshness. A gentle decant of 30–60 minutes in its youth helps the wine open and soften the tannins; as it develops with age, decanting just before serving will be sufficient to let the bouquet fully blossom.
