This is the estate’s grand cru expression: precise, deeply mineral and built for both immediate pleasure and long-term cellaring. The Abtsberg parcel has been celebrated for centuries for producing some of the most finely etched and age-worthy Rieslings of the Ruwer valley, and this GG continues that tradition with remarkable clarity and finesse.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Abtsberg GG shows a pale lemon–green color with silvery highlights, hinting at its youthful energy and cool-climate origin. The nose is immediately inviting yet refined, with aromas of ripe orchard fruits—yellow apple and pear—alongside classic Riesling notes of white peach and apricot. Delicate citrus zest, crushed slate, and a whisper of herbs weave through the fruit, with subtle hints of floral blossom and a faint, creamy nuance that rounds the profile without weighing it down. On the palate, this is dry, focused and beautifully structured. The fruit is generous but never exuberant: juicy stone fruit and ripe apple are tightly framed by vibrant, finely integrated acidity. A distinct, salty-mineral streak—so typical of Abtsberg’s blue slate soils—runs through the wine from start to finish, lending length and tension. The texture is silky with a gentle creaminess, balanced by a firm core and a long, precise finish. Enjoyable in its youth for its openness and pure fruit, it has excellent aging potential; over 8–15 years, it will gain complexity, developing notes of honey, smoke, and petrol while retaining its backbone of freshness.
Production
The Abtsberg vineyard sits on steep, south- to southwest-facing slopes above the Ruwer River, rooted in weathered Devonian blue slate that imparts the vineyard’s hallmark precision and minerality. The cool Ruwer microclimate, combined with excellent drainage and low yields, allows the Riesling grapes to ripen slowly, preserving acidity and aromatic intensity. Grapes are hand-harvested in multiple selective passes to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy fruit is picked. In the cellar, the must is gently pressed and typically undergoes spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, often in traditional large oak Fuder casks, which lend subtle textural polish without overt oak flavor. Extended lees contact further refines the wine’s structure, resulting in a Großes Gewächs that is both concentrated and incredibly precise.
Food & Serving
This Abtsberg GG is a versatile partner at the table, shining brightest with refined, delicately flavored dishes. Think poached or grilled white fish, scallops, or prawns; roasted poultry; veal in light cream or herb sauces; or classic German dishes such as trout ‘Müllerin Art’. It also pairs beautifully with sashimi, sushi, and high-quality tempura, and stands up well to mildly spiced Asian cuisine, especially dishes with ginger, lemongrass, or citrus accents. Serve at 9–11 °C to highlight its tension and aromatic detail. Young bottles will benefit from 30–60 minutes in a decanter to allow the nose to open and the texture to fully unfold; older vintages should be handled gently and decanted only briefly for sediment, if at all.
