Sourced from several prized parcels in Serralunga and a select site in Castiglione Falletto, it delivers a refined balance of elegance, depth and authenticity. Aged for 30 months in large oak casks, this Barolo captures the traditional character of the region while remaining accessible in its youth and excellent value for cellar-worthy wine.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Massolino Barolo shows a luminous garnet core with brick-red hues at the rim, typical of classic Nebbiolo. The nose is finely etched, opening with wild red berries, dried blueberries and red cherries, followed by notes of rose petals, violets and a sweet hint of lilac or syringa. Subtler layers of anise, dried herbs and a touch of spice emerge with air, underpinned by a gentle, savory earthiness. On the palate, the wine is beautifully poised: medium to full-bodied with a velvet-like texture, yet linear and focused. Flavors of wild berries, cranberry and dried blueberry are framed by fresh acidity and finely grained tannins that are firm but not austere. The finish is medium-dark, long and graceful, with lingering floral and red-fruited notes. While already approachable with some aeration, the structure and balance suggest excellent aging potential for 10–15 years or more under proper cellaring conditions.
Production
The fruit for Massolino Barolo 2020 comes from vineyards in Serralunga d’Alba—specifically Collaretto, Briccolina, Broglio and Le Turne—as well as a selected site in Castiglione Falletto, two of Barolo’s most esteemed communes. The soils here are primarily calcareous marl with varying clay and sandstone components, giving wines of notable structure, minerality and aromatic complexity. Grapes are carefully hand-harvested to ensure only perfectly ripe Nebbiolo clusters reach the winery. Fermentation and maceration take place in temperature-controlled tanks to gently extract color, tannin and aroma. The wine is then aged for 30 months in large traditional Slavonian oak casks, a method that respects the purity of the fruit and terroir, followed by additional time in bottle to harmonize before release.
Food & Serving
This Barolo pairs beautifully with richly flavored dishes that complement its structure and aromatics: braised beef or veal, ossobuco, slow-cooked lamb, duck, game birds and truffle-infused risottos or tajarin pasta. Mature hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano, aged Pecorino or a well-aged Comté also work very well. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight the wine’s aromatic complexity and silky texture. Decant for 1–2 hours in its youth to soften the tannins and allow the floral and berry notes to fully unfold; older bottles (8+ years) may need gentler, shorter decanting primarily for sediment.
Producer
Founded in 1896, Massolino is one of the historic family estates of Serralunga d’Alba and a reference point for traditionally styled Barolo. Over generations, the Massolino family has expanded and refined their holdings in some of the commune’s most esteemed vineyards, building a reputation for wines that combine depth, longevity and precision. Firmly rooted in the classic methods of long cask aging and careful vineyard work, the estate has helped define the character of Serralunga Barolo—structured yet elegant, powerful yet nuanced. Their crus and village wines alike are regularly praised by international critics, and the estate is widely regarded as a benchmark producer in the Barolo region.
