Crafted from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, this iconic red wine captures the generosity of the 2018 vintage while remaining unmistakably Margaux in its elegance. As one of only a handful of First Growths classified in 1855, it stands as a reference point for collectors and serious wine lovers worldwide.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Château Margaux displays a deep, radiant garnet-purple hue with youthful intensity at the rim, promising long life ahead. The nose is immediately complex and seductive: blackcurrant and ripe blackberry layered with violets, rose petals, cigar box, pencil shavings, and a refined graphite mineral note. Subtle hints of cedar, tobacco leaf, vanilla pod and warm spice from fine French oak unfold with air, giving great aromatic dimension. On the palate, this wine is both powerful and impeccably polished. Concentrated cassis, black cherry and plum fruit are framed by ultra-fine, velvety tannins and a beautifully integrated acidity that keeps everything fresh and poised. Notes of dark chocolate, espresso, truffle and exotic spice emerge on the long, persistent finish, alongside the signature floral lift of Margaux. While already remarkably harmonious in its youth, the 2018 has the structure and depth to age gracefully for decades—at least 20–30 years in a good cellar, with its peak likely from the late 2020s onward.
Production
Château Margaux lies on some of the most privileged terroir in the Médoc, with deep, well-draining gravel soils over limestone and clay that are particularly suited to Cabernet Sauvignon. The estate’s parcels are meticulously managed with strict yield control and careful green harvesting to ensure optimal ripeness and concentration. Grapes are hand-harvested at precisely chosen dates, parcel by parcel, and rigorously sorted before vinification. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, with each plot vinified separately to preserve its character, followed by élevage in a high proportion of new French oak barrels. Throughout, the focus is on gentle extraction and precision, resulting in a grand vin that reflects both its noble terroir and the generosity of the 2018 vintage.
Food & Serving
This is a wine that shines alongside refined, flavorful cuisine. Think roast lamb with herbs, dry-aged ribeye, venison or other game, truffled poultry, or classic French dishes such as entrecôte bordelaise and tournedos Rossini. It also pairs beautifully with mature hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and textural finesse. In its youth, decanting for 2–3 hours is recommended to fully open the nose and soften the structure; with more bottle age, a gentle 1-hour decant will suffice to remove sediment and let the wine express itself.
Producer
Château Margaux is one of Bordeaux’s most storied and revered estates, recognized as a Premier Grand Cru Classé in the historic 1855 Classification—a status it has more than justified over centuries. Viticulture on the property dates back to at least the 12th century, but the château truly rose to prominence in the 18th and 19th centuries as a standard-bearer for the Margaux appellation. Under modern ownership and meticulous stewardship, it has continued to refine its style, combining traditional craftsmanship with thoughtful innovation in the vineyard and cellar. Consistently among the top wines of the Médoc and frequently lauded by critics, Château Margaux is regarded as a symbol of finesse, longevity and the very essence of great Bordeaux.
