This vintage brings together Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot in a polished, age-worthy blend that balances ripe fruit with freshness and elegance. Rooted in the gravelly soils of Léognan and shaped by meticulous, modern winemaking, it delivers a wine that speaks clearly of its historic terroir and outstanding 2020 harvest.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Malartic Lagravière shows a deep, vibrant ruby-purple hue with impressive density and brightness at the rim. The nose is expressive and layered: blackcurrant, ripe blackberries and plum are wrapped in notes of graphite, cedar, violets and subtle tobacco leaf, with hints of mocha, spice box and a touch of pencil shavings that underline its Graves origin. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied with a silky, structured frame. The Cabernet Sauvignon brings precision and backbone, while Merlot adds plush dark fruit and flesh, and the Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot contribute floral, spicy complexity. Fine-grained, chalky tannins and a lively line of acidity keep everything focused and fresh, leading to a long, mineral-tinged finish with echoes of cassis, cocoa and savory herbs. The 2020 has the concentration and balance to evolve beautifully over time; enjoy it now with a good decant, or cellar for 10–20 years to see the more complex, tertiary notes of leather, truffle and cigar box emerge.
Production
Château Malartic-Lagravière lies in Léognan, at the heart of Graves, where deep deposits of Garonne gravel sit over limestone and clay, providing superb drainage and naturally limiting yields. This gravel-rich terroir is key to the estate’s hallmark combination of aromatic lift, mineral precision and refined tannins. The grapes for the Grand Cru Classé red are harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, often by hand, to preserve berry integrity and allow strict selection. In the cellar, Malartic-Lagravière uses a gravity-flow system to handle the fruit gently, followed by fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel and wooden vats, with careful extraction to favor finesse over power. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels—typically with a significant proportion of new oak—for around 15–20 months, gaining texture, aromatic complexity and the subtle spice that frames its pure Graves fruit.
Food & Serving
This is a versatile, gastronomic Bordeaux that shines alongside classic dishes. Think roast lamb with herbs, entrecôte with béarnaise, duck breast, braised short ribs, or a simple grilled steak with roasted root vegetables. Its earthy, graphite and tobacco notes also pair beautifully with mushroom dishes, confit duck, game birds, or aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its freshness and aromatic complexity. For younger bottles, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to soften the tannins and open up the bouquet; more mature bottles can be opened gently and allowed to evolve in the glass.
Producer
Château Malartic-Lagravière is one of the historic names of Graves, with origins dating back to the 18th century and a reputation that has long been tied to its exceptional gravel terroir. Classified among the Crus Classés de Graves in the 1953 classification for both its red and white wines, the estate holds a rare dual distinction in Bordeaux. Since the late 1990s, Malartic-Lagravière has been owned and revitalized by the Bonnie family, who have invested heavily in the vineyards and a state-of-the-art, gravity-fed winery. Under their stewardship, the château has become a benchmark for pure, terroir-driven wines in Pessac-Léognan, regularly earning critical acclaim for its elegant, age-worthy reds that combine modern precision with the classic, smoky-mineral character of Graves.
