Matured for nearly two decades in a combination of American and European oak casks, both seasoned with sherry, it delivers a layered profile of sweetness, spice and dried fruits. As part of one of the most sought‑after age-statement series in the whisky world, this 18-year-old bottling continues Macallan’s legacy of precision, patience and cask mastery.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Macallan 18 Years Double Cask 2024 Release presents a deep, burnished amber hue with golden highlights, a visual cue to its long sherry-seasoned oak maturation. The nose opens with rich dried fruits—sultanas, figs and dates—intertwined with orange zest, honeycomb, creamy vanilla and toffee, followed by warm baking spices, polished oak and a hint of ginger. On the palate, this whisky is full-bodied and silky, offering an immediate impression of honeyed malt, toffee and vanilla crème, supported by layers of raisins, apricot, baking spice and a touch of nutmeg and clove. The influence of American oak brings sweetness and creamy texture, while European oak adds structure, spice and depth. The finish is long and warming, with lingering notes of dried fruit, citrus oil, gentle oak tannin and sweet spice. Bottled at 43%, it is approachable yet complex, with enough concentration to reward slow sipping. Properly stored, this 18-year-old can continue to evolve subtly in the bottle over the next decade, though it is fully ready to enjoy now.
Production
Macallan 18 Years Double Cask is crafted at The Macallan Estate in Speyside, Scotland, overlooking the River Spey—an area famed for its soft water, cool climate and rolling barley fields. The Double Cask concept unites whiskies matured exclusively in sherry-seasoned American oak and European oak casks, both sourced and seasoned to Macallan’s exacting specifications in Jerez, Spain. After careful selection of high-quality oak, the casks are seasoned with oloroso sherry before being shipped to Scotland. The spirit, distilled in Macallan’s characteristically small copper pot stills for maximum richness and reflux, is then filled into these casks and left to mature undisturbed for a minimum of 18 years. Only when the whiskies have reached their peak are they expertly married, with no added color, to achieve the signature harmony of creamy vanilla sweetness from American oak and spiced dried fruits from European oak.
Food & Serving
Macallan 18 Years Double Cask is best enjoyed neat or with just a few drops of water to open up its layers of aroma. It pairs beautifully with high-cocoa dark chocolate, roasted nuts, caramel-based desserts, and mature hard cheeses; for a more indulgent experience, try it alongside blue cheese or a rich chocolate tart. It also complements a fine cigar for those who enjoy classic after-dinner pairings. Serve at cool room temperature, around 18–20°C (64–68°F), in a quality tulip-shaped whisky glass to focus the aromas. Decanting is not required, but allowing the whisky to rest in the glass for several minutes before sipping will significantly enhance its complexity.
