Combining power, precision and polish, this iconic Pauillac delivers the structure and depth collectors look for, while remaining approachable with proper cellaring or decanting. It’s a superb choice for those seeking a classic, age-worthy Médoc with a track record of excellence. Classified as a Fifth Growth in 1855 yet long regarded as outperforming its rank, Lynch Bages has become a reference point for full-bodied, Cabernet-driven Pauillac. The 2010 vintage in Bordeaux is renowned for its concentration, ripe tannins and remarkable balance, giving this wine both immediate impact and exceptional longevity. This bottle captures the historic gravel terroir of Pauillac and the estate’s modern precision in one compelling, cellar-worthy wine.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Lynch Bages 2010 shows a deep, opaque ruby to garnet core with a youthful purple rim, still remarkably vibrant for its age. The nose opens with intense aromas of blackcurrant and blackberry compote, layered with graphite, cedarwood, cigar box, and pencil shavings. With air, subtler notes emerge: dried violets, tobacco leaf, crushed stone, espresso roast, and a hint of licorice and dark chocolate. On the palate, this is full-bodied and authoritative, with a firm backbone of ripe, finely-grained tannins and a core of dense black fruit. Flavors of cassis, black cherry and plum interweave with savory nuances of cedar, leather, and earth, plus a subtle saline, mineral edge that speaks clearly of Pauillac’s gravelly soils. The acidity is fresh and well-integrated, giving lift and precision to the generous fruit. The finish is long, persistent and layered, with lingering notes of cassis, spice and graphite. The 2010 Lynch Bages is still on an upward trajectory: it can be enjoyed now after extended decanting, but has the structure and balance to age gracefully for 20+ more years from now, evolving toward more tertiary, truffle and tobacco-driven complexity.
Production
Lynch Bages lies on a superb plateau of deep gravel over limestone in the heart of Pauillac, a classic Left Bank terroir that naturally favors Cabernet Sauvignon. The well-drained, pebbly soils force vines to dig deep, concentrating flavor while the proximity to the Gironde estuary moderates temperatures and helps achieve optimal ripeness, particularly in a great vintage like 2010. Grapes are traditionally harvested by hand, with careful sorting in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy berries make it into the Grand Vin. The blend is typically dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot with smaller portions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, each parcel vinified separately to preserve nuance. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats before the wine is aged in French oak barrels, a significant proportion of which are new, for around 18 months. Throughout élevage, regular rackings and precise blending contribute to the wine’s polish, depth and longevity.
Food & Serving
This 2010 Lynch Bages is a natural partner for classic, richly flavored dishes. Think roast or grilled lamb with rosemary, dry-aged ribeye steak, beef Wellington, venison, or slow-braised short ribs. It also pairs beautifully with hearty dishes featuring mushrooms, truffles, or root vegetables, as well as firm, aged cheeses like Comté, aged Gouda, or mature cheddar. For best enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (around 60–64°F). At this stage in its life, the wine benefits from a thorough decant: plan on 2–3 hours in a decanter to allow the bouquet to fully open and the tannins to soften, especially if opened on the younger side of its drinking window. If drinking at full maturity, a gentle one-hour decant to remove sediment and let the aromas unfurl is often sufficient.
