Crafted in the Douro by acclaimed winemaker Luís Seabra, this wine offers a fresher, more textural take on the region, far from the heavy, overworked reds of the past. Mono C is part of Seabra’s “Mono” series, designed to showcase pure, unblended expressions of specific grape varieties and their terroir.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Mono C 2021 shows a vibrant medium ruby color with a slight translucency, hinting at its finesse rather than sheer power. The nose is lifted and aromatic, with wild red berries, sour cherry and red plum layered over notes of dried herbs, rose petal, cracked pepper, and a subtle rocky, mineral edge. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, juicy, and linear, with bright acidity driving the flavors of cranberry, raspberry, pomegranate and red currant. Fine-grained, gently grippy tannins frame the fruit, while nuances of dried thyme, black tea, and a faint smokiness add complexity and length. The finish is fresh, savory, and persistent, making it a superb food wine rather than a showy blockbuster. Enjoy it now for its energy and purity, or over the next 5–7 years as the tannins soften and the savory, tertiary notes develop further.
Production
Sourced from carefully selected Douro vineyards, Mono C 2021 reflects Luís Seabra’s low-intervention philosophy and deep respect for place. The Castelão vines grow on poor, stony soils typical of the Douro—dominated by schist and mixed with some clay—encouraging low yields and naturally concentrated grapes with strong mineral definition. Harvesting is done by hand to ensure gentle selection of bunches in the vineyard and at the winery. Fermentation typically takes place in stainless steel or neutral vessels with indigenous yeasts, favoring moderate extraction to preserve finesse rather than power. Aging is often carried out in older oak or inert vessels, allowing the grape’s varietal character and the Douro’s terroir to shine through without heavy oak influence.
Food & Serving
Mono C 2021 is a versatile, food-friendly red that pairs beautifully with grilled or roasted meats, charcuterie, and Mediterranean-inspired dishes. Try it with grilled lamb chops with herbs, roast chicken with garlic and lemon, pork tenderloin, or hearty pasta dishes with tomato-based sauces. It also works well alongside grilled vegetables, mushroom dishes, and aged semi-hard cheeses. Serve at 15–17°C (slightly cooler than room temperature) to emphasize its freshness and aromatic lift. A short decant of 30–45 minutes helps the wine open up and soften the tannins, especially in its youth.
Producer
Luis Seabra Vinhos is the personal project of Luís Seabra, one of Portugal’s most respected and influential winemakers, known for his long tenure at Niepoort before striking out on his own. Founded in the Douro, the estate is dedicated to expressing the region’s diverse terroirs through minimal intervention and a strong focus on old vines and native varieties. Seabra’s wines are widely praised for their precision, freshness, and transparency, often standing in contrast to the more opulent style historically associated with the Douro. Today, Luis Seabra Vinhos is regarded as a benchmark producer for serious, terroir-driven Portuguese wines, earning recognition from sommeliers, wine writers, and collectors worldwide.
