Held back in the house’s cellars for extended aging, this Vinothèque release offers a deeper, more complex interpretation of Cristal Rosé while preserving its trademark finesse and precision. It is a dazzling example of how time, patience, and meticulous craftsmanship can elevate great Champagne into something truly profound.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Cristal Vinothèque Rosé 1999 shows a luminous, delicate salmon-pink hue with fine, persistent streams of tiny bubbles that speak to its long maturation. The nose is incredibly detailed and complex: aromas of dried citrus peel, pink pomelo and blood orange mingle with white cherry, pastry cream, fresh brioche, iodine, and beeswax, revealing themselves layer by layer as the wine opens in the glass. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied, vinous and textural, with a muscular yet refined structure. The chalky backbone is immediately evident, giving definition and energy to the wine’s generous, almost creamy mid-palate. Flavors of red citrus, stone fruit, white cherries and subtly spiced pastry glide across the tongue, framed by a saline, mineral edge that keeps everything beautifully taut. The finish is long, juicy and mouthwatering, with lingering notes of citrus zest and fine chalk. Fully mature and in a superb place now, this wine still has the depth and balance to drink beautifully over the next decade or more, especially when properly cellared.
Production
Cristal Vinothèque Rosé 1999 is crafted from meticulously selected Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes sourced from Louis Roederer’s finest Grand Cru vineyards in Champagne, where chalk-rich soils and cool, temperate conditions give the wine its signature tension, minerality and elegance. The fruit is harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, ensuring pristine bunches and careful selection in the vineyard. Traditional vinification is carried out with great precision, with a portion of the wines aged in oak to add texture and complexity, followed by an exceptionally long maturation: seven years sur lattes (on the lees in bottle laid horizontally) and a further seven years sur pointes (stored on their necks), before disgorgement and release in 2013. This extended aging regime is what gives the Vinothèque bottling its remarkable depth, harmony and tertiary nuance.
Food & Serving
This is a gastronomic Champagne Rosé, ideally suited to refined, savory dishes. It pairs beautifully with lobster, langoustines, scallops, or turbot, as well as fine sushi and sashimi, or delicate game birds such as quail and guinea fowl. Its complexity can also complement dishes featuring truffle, caviar, or rich poultry with cream-based sauces. Serve well-chilled but not too cold, around 10–12°C (50–54°F), to allow the full aromatic spectrum to unfold. Decanting is not essential, but pouring the wine into large, tulip-shaped Champagne glasses and giving it a few minutes in the glass will help it fully express its layered bouquet and texture.
Producer
Founded in 1776, Louis Roederer is one of Champagne’s last great family-owned houses and the esteemed creator of Cristal, originally commissioned in the 19th century for Tsar Alexander II of Russia. Based in Reims, Roederer has built its reputation on owning and meticulously farming an extensive holding of Premier and Grand Cru vineyards, allowing exceptional control over quality and style across vintages. Cristal, and especially the rare Vinothèque releases, represent the pinnacle of the house’s savoir-faire: long aging, precise blending, and an unshakeable commitment to expressing Champagne’s chalk-rich terroirs.
