This vintage delivers a remarkably pure, chiselled expression of Cristal, showcasing tension, precision and mineral depth over overt richness. It is a collector’s Champagne with serious aging potential, crafted only in the finest years from Roederer’s best estate vineyards, a tradition that began when Cristal was first created for Tsar Alexander II in 1876.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Cristal 2016 shimmers a pale, luminous gold with a fine, persistent mousse that forms delicate chains of bubbles. The nose is initially reserved and refined, offering layers of citrus oil, white flowers and cool wet stone, gradually opening to reveal hints of fresh pastry and subtle buttery brioche as it relaxes in the glass. On the palate, this is a medium to full-bodied Champagne with a sculpted, almost architectural precision. A pure core of citrus and white stone fruit is wrapped in a firm, chalky frame, giving both intensity and lift. The acidity feels bright and almost electric, echoing the tension of the celebrated 2013 vintage, while the finish is long, linear and intensely mineral. Still tightly coiled in its youth, Cristal 2016 is built for the long haul and will reward patience, evolving beautifully over the next 10–20 years or more.
Production
Cristal 2016 is sourced exclusively from Louis Roederer’s own grands crus vineyards, many of them biodynamically farmed and rooted in the chalk-rich slopes that define the heart of Champagne. The blend is dominated by Pinot Noir with a substantial proportion of Chardonnay, reflecting Roederer’s classic Cristal style of power allied to finesse. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, parcel by parcel, to preserve the delicacy and precision of each terroir. A significant portion of the wines are fermented in oak, with careful bâtonnage, while malolactic fermentation is partially blocked to retain freshness and tension. After blending, Cristal rests for years on its lees in Roederer’s historic cellars before disgorgement, followed by additional bottle aging to ensure perfect harmony upon release.
Food & Serving
Cristal 2016 is an outstanding partner for refined, delicately prepared dishes: think oysters or caviar, scallop carpaccio, lobster, turbot, or lightly buttered sole, as well as fine sushi and sashimi. It also pairs beautifully with elegant poultry dishes and subtly creamy sauces that won’t overpower its finesse. Serve well chilled but not icy, ideally around 8–10°C (46–50°F), to allow the aromas to unfold gradually. Decanting is not necessary, but pouring into a fine, tulip-shaped Champagne glass and giving it time in the glass will help this tightly wound vintage open up and reveal its full complexity.
