Crafted from predominantly Viura with a touch of Malvasía, this is a serious, contemplative white for collectors and adventurous drinkers alike. From an outstanding 2004 vintage and released only after more than a decade of maturation, it offers a glimpse into the timeless, traditional craft of Lopez de Heredia.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2004 Tondonia Gran Reserva Blanco shows a deep golden hue with amber highlights, signaling its long aging and slow evolution. The nose is wonderfully complex and distinctive: layers of dried chamomile, beeswax, wildflower pollen, and toasted grain mingle with white pepper, mushroom, and a delicate hint of petrol and celery leaf, even a touch of asparagus. Subtle notes of nuts, light smoke, and old oak spice weave through the aromatic profile, giving it an almost Burgundian breadth with a uniquely Riojan twist. On the palate, the wine is dry, velvety and remarkably fresh despite its age, with a refined, savory depth. Flavors of dried citrus peel, preserved lemon, and orchard fruit are wrapped in creamy, waxy texture and lifted by a vibrant line of acidity. There’s a faint saline, almost chalky twist on the long, mouthwatering finish that invites another sip. Though already beautifully developed, this 2004 still feels youthful at its core and has the structure and concentration to age gracefully for many more years, easily another decade or longer in a good cellar.
Production
The Tondonia vineyards lie along a bend of the Ebro River in Rioja Alta, on poor, gravelly and alluvial soils that naturally limit yields and contribute to the wine’s tension and mineral core. Lopez de Heredia farms these historic parcels traditionally, with a strong respect for biodiversity and minimal intervention in the vines. Grapes for the Gran Reserva Blanco are harvested by hand at optimal maturity, carefully sorted, and gently pressed before fermentation. Vinification follows the classic house style: long aging in well‑seasoned, neutral American oak barrels in the estate’s cool, cobwebbed underground cellars, where the 2004 Blanco spent around 10 years in barrel. During this time, the wine underwent slow oxidation and clarification, gaining its signature complexity, texture, and tertiary nuances. After racking and bottling, it was given additional years of bottle age before release, ensuring it reached the market fully integrated and ready to drink, yet with remarkable aging potential still ahead.
Food & Serving
This is a gastronomic white that shines with richly flavored dishes. Pair it with roasted or grilled white fish, monkfish, turbot, or cod, as well as shellfish in butter or cream sauces, lobster, scallops, or crab. It’s excellent alongside roast chicken, guinea fowl, veal, or pork with herbs, and works beautifully with mushroom dishes, aged Manchego, Comté, or nutty hard cheeses. Serve cool but not too cold, ideally around 12–14 °C (54–57 °F), to let the aromas fully express themselves. A gentle decant of 30–45 minutes can help the wine open up, especially in its youth, revealing more layers of spice, honeyed notes, and savory depth.
Producer
Lopez de Heredia, founded in 1877 in Haro, is one of Rioja’s oldest and most revered bodegas, and a staunch guardian of traditional winemaking. Still family‑owned and run, the estate has become synonymous with age‑worthy, long‑matured Riojas that defy modern fashion and showcase the region’s classical identity. Viña Tondonia is their flagship vineyard, a historic site in Rioja Alta whose name appears on some of the most sought‑after red and white wines of the region. The bodega’s commitment to long barrel aging, use of neutral American oak, and late releases has earned it cult status among sommeliers and collectors worldwide. Lopez de Heredia’s whites, especially the Tondonia Gran Reserva Blanco, are considered among the very finest traditional white Riojas, often compared in longevity and complexity to top white Burgundy and other great age‑worthy whites.
