This is a wine for those who appreciate precision over power, with beautifully judged oak, polished tannins and remarkable freshness. Classified as a Second Growth in the legendary 1855 classification, Léoville Poyferré has long been considered one of the great names of the Médoc, consistently delivering wines that rival the very top estates in complexity and age-worthiness.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Léoville Poyferré is a deep, vibrant ruby with purple highlights at the rim, signaling both youth and concentration. The nose is aromatic and lifted, offering layers of blackcurrant, blackberry and ripe red cherry interwoven with notes of graphite, cedar, violets and subtle toasted spice. Hints of tobacco leaf, wet gravel and a touch of cocoa emerge with air, adding refinement and depth. On the palate, this vintage leans into finesse rather than sheer power. Medium to full-bodied, it shows a core of pure cassis and dark plum framed by finely grained, velvety tannins and a lively, refreshing acidity. Subtle notes of pencil shavings, cigar box, licorice and baking spices echo the nose, carried on a long, precise finish that is both savory and mineral. The 2021 has excellent structure for aging; while approachable with some air in its youth, it will continue to develop greater aromatic complexity and textural harmony over 10–20 years, and likely beyond in a good cellar.
Production
Léoville Poyferré is rooted in the heart of Saint-Julien on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, where deep Garonne gravel soils over clay and sand provide ideal drainage and stress for Cabernet Sauvignon, while Merlot and the other Bordeaux varieties find perfect balance. The 2021 vintage, marked by cooler conditions and meticulous vineyard work, demanded careful selection: the grapes were hand-harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, with an exacting sorting both in the vineyard and at the winery. The blend typically features a Cabernet Sauvignon majority complemented by Merlot, with smaller proportions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot adding aromatic lift and structure. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats, with gentle extraction to preserve freshness and precision, followed by aging in French oak barrels (a significant portion new) to bring finesse, integration and subtle spice without overwhelming the fruit.
Food & Serving
This Saint-Julien is a natural partner for classic dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, entrecôte steak, beef Wellington, duck breast, and game birds. It also shines with richer mushroom dishes, truffled poultry, or aged hard cheeses like Comté and mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and fine structure. In its youth, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the bouquet to open and the tannins to soften; as it matures, a gentle 30–45 minute decant will help separate any sediment and let the wine fully express its layered character.
Producer
Léoville Poyferré is one of the three historic Léoville estates in Saint-Julien, tracing its roots back to the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Elevated to 2ème Grand Cru Classé status in the 1855 classification, it has long been regarded as a benchmark for the appellation, combining the power and structure typical of the Médoc with an especially silky, seductive style. Under the stewardship of the Cuvelier family since the early 20th century, and with significant investments in both vineyard and cellar over recent decades, Léoville Poyferré has risen to the very top tier of Bordeaux, regularly earning high critical praise and a loyal following among collectors. Its wines are celebrated for their balance of richness, elegance and longevity, and for expressing the quintessential character of Saint-Julien’s gravelly terroir.
