The cooler, later 2019 vintage in Margaret River has given this release a particularly refined, mineral-driven profile, wrapped around beautifully pure, long-lived fruit. Sourced from some of Leeuwin’s oldest Chardonnay blocks, it offers both immediate finesse and impressive aging potential for collectors.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Art Series Chardonnay shows a pale lemon-gold hue with green highlights, hinting at both youth and concentration. The nose is finely etched and aromatic: white peach, nectarine and lemon curd layered with grapefruit zest, crunchy pear and subtle notes of toasted hazelnut, crème brûlée and fresh brioche. Underneath sits a cool, stony minerality and delicate hints of flint, struck match and white blossom that speak to its precision and restraint. On the palate, this is focused and taut yet textured, with a seamless balance between ripe stone fruit, citrus and classy oak. Expect flavors of peach, Meyer lemon and mandarin peel, wrapped in almond cream, vanilla pod and a touch of spice from high-quality French barrels. The acidity is bright and linear, giving a long, saline, mouthwatering finish that feels both powerful and elegant. While already impressive, the 2019 is built to age gracefully for 10–15 years or more, gaining layers of hazelnut, honey, brioche and truffle-like complexity as the primary fruit slowly evolves.
Production
The fruit for the 2019 Art Series Chardonnay comes from Leeuwin’s famed Block 20 and Block 22 vineyards in Margaret River, planted in 1976 and 1978 on well-drained gravel and loam over clay – classic terroir for structured, ageworthy Chardonnay. The cooler, later 2019 season allowed for slow, even ripening, preserving acidity and fine aromatics. Grapes were hand-picked at optimal ripeness, with up to 30% of the cuvée whole-bunch pressed directly into 100% new Burgundian French oak, while the remaining portion was destemmed, gently crushed and pressed to 100% new Bordelais oak barrels. Fermentation took place in barrel, and sulfur was added after alcoholic fermentation to inhibit malolactic transformation, preserving the wine’s tension and citrus-driven freshness. Both components were aged on lees in barrel for approximately 11 months, with careful bâtonnage and selection to achieve the hallmark Art Series depth, polish and precision.
Food & Serving
This refined Chardonnay pairs beautifully with rich yet delicately flavored dishes such as butter-poached lobster, pan-seared scallops, roast chicken with tarragon, or veal in a light cream sauce. It also works wonderfully with halibut or turbot, grilled prawns, and creamy seafood pastas, as well as mild, nutty cheeses like Comté or aged Gruyère. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to showcase its freshness while allowing the oak and texture to unfold. If drinking young, a gentle decant of 30–45 minutes can help the wine open up; older bottles are best served without extended aeration, poured carefully from the bottle to preserve their mature nuances.
